Meet Kelly Sildaru, age 9, who won best upcoming freeskier at IF3 Europe.

At the European stop of the International Freeskiing Film Festival (IF3) in France this fall, an Estonian skier named Kelly Sildaru won best upcoming freeskier for her video part in PVS's 2010 film Punch Line. But here's the surprising part about Sildaru's win: She's just nine years old.***

Most everyone skis better than I, that's a given. There is incredible talent on the slopes. I watched a kid, who couldn't have been more than 7 go down an icy double black following his day, and he flowed down, around and over those moguls like it was cream. If only I had learned at that age.

Kids today are so far ahead of kids years ago. More runs a day, better gear, better technique, better terrain/features, etc. So many factors come into play. These kids are amazing.

And in many cases, don't forget better instruction! (or atleast compared to years past, instruction specifically geared towards kids rather than instruction for an adult that then wasn't adjusted to accomodate a childs different interests/needs)

I've been skiing since I was 8 or 9. I took about 15 years off after high school, but I think I am now a bit better than I was as a teenager. I have only had a couple lessons in my life, but I have taught myself to be a pretty solid skier. What I lack in technique, I make up for with effort and enthusiasm.

Where am I going with this? I have come the realization that my 10 y.o. daughter is a better skier than I am. In one way or another, she has skied with excellent instructors since she was 4. She does not have the experience or (over)confidence that I have, but she flat out knows how to ski. Her form is amazing. Is it embarrassing to admit this? A little bit, but mostly it just makes me proud.

Magic carpet got my youngest up on skis at 2.5yo, about 6 times first season. He's 6yo now and this is his 5th year on skis - that thing really made it a breeze for us. Total parallel, rips down the sides of trails with hubby and I, in/out of bumps, trees, obstacles, probably goes 40+ days/year. Total trouper, got the wind knocked out of himself on Sunday with his ski group. My older kids started about 4/5yo, was tougher w/o the magic carpet (IMO) and they weren't as 'core' as lil guy was lol..they just didn't enjoy it out of the gate as much as lil one.

Can any park rats out there explain to me the benefits of sitting on your ski tails when approaching some jump?

I watched the video previously posted and thought - that is a tall 9 year old. Looks like my son's size then I found this below and realize she is my son's age (13). Then I realized the OP was talking about 2010. All very impressive.

Kelly Sildaru (born 17 February 2002) is an Estonian freestyle skier.

She won women's slopestyle at 2015 Dew tour.[1]

Kelly won Gold in the slopestyle event in the 2016 Winter X Games beating Tiril Sjåstad Christiansen.[2] With this win, at age 13, Kelly became the youngest gold medalist to date at a Winter X Games event, and the first person to win a Winter X Games medal for Estonia.

Thing is she is still not declaring herself Pro.

Is there such a thing as collegiate freestyle skiing or do these girls play other sports they wish to maintain eligibility for?
