Another Reason Why I Don't Fish

I sent the article to my brother, and he siad it happens all the time at teh Morehead City (NC) marlin tournaments. With all the people who fish, I guess even if it happens a couple of times a year it's still pretty rare. Kind of like shark bites.

It's still weird, and one of those things youhope to survive, because it make a great story.

Yup, it does happen frequently, especially with big billfish like Marlin. An 800 pound fish is a formidable opponent and will usually take at least an hour in the fighting chair to tire it out enough to land it safely. Marlin are jumpers...one of their fighting techniques is to charge the boat to get slack in the fishing line, then jump to shake the hook. I just saw a video this weekend of a Marlin that did this, jumped into the boat, trashed the deck, broke a fighting chair, then jumped off the hook and out of the boat.

BTW, most Marlin caught today by sportfishermen are tagged and released.
