Any coffee fiends out there?

How many of you are coffee (or tea) fiends?

As far as alcoholic beverages go, I'm practically a non-drinker (although I can appreciate a good beer), but coffee is an entirely different matter -- I know I have the equivalent of several cups a day. I cut back on weekends but that can make me quite tired in the afternoon. :???:

I'm not a "coffee connoisseur" by any means, and I stay away from dark roast, espresso, etc.

I'd prefer to consume a lot less, but I have no interest in cutting out entirely.

Any "reformed caffeine addicts"? Did you have any special tricks to cut back?

I'm a fiend. When I stopped drinking diet and regular soda my coffee intake increased. I was hooked on Diet Coke (2-3 a day) and concerned about the artificial sweetener. But at the same time my water intake is much greater. For me the compromise was worth it. No soda but more water and coffee. And when it comes to coffee intake I do my 16 oz. morning coffee and at the most a cup in the afternoon once or twice a week.

I think you are right about cutting back. Moderation is the key.

When I was in teh restaurant, I'd drink 2-3 pots a day. That's not healthy. Now, I drink tea. There's almost always a cup on my desk, and I probably drink 2-3 through the course of the day. I mix it up, though, between black, green, and herbals, to moderate the total caffeine. One cup of coffee in the morning, tea all day, beer all night.

The key to moderation is substitution. Replace the cofee with some other beverage, but do it slowly, becausa caffeine is addictive, and you will have withdrawals (I used to get little headaches if my coffee intake fell too much)

I have a naturally high metabolism and drink one cup of regular coffee a day, before 10am. I like it as much for the taste and the warmth as for the stimulant effect. If I drink coffee after 2pm I'm up all night.

Starbucks will never get rich off of me...their coffee is just way too strong for my tastes and if I do drink a cup of it I'm either bouncing off the walls or begging someone to peel me off the ceiling.

JimG I'm with you. My typical coffee intake happens early in the day (usually before 9). But oddly enough, I can drink a cup of coffee right before bedtime and it doesn't effect me.

As for Starbuck's, the wife and I are helping to keep them in business. I was a huge Dunkin Donuts fan until I got over the Starbuck's image. To me, it just tastes better.

I could never get into Dunkin Donuts coffee -- it was always too weak and they always put in waaay too much cream.

I used to be into Starbucks and I'll still choose it over regular, but I have to go easy on it...I don't think I get any more wired from it, but it's a bit rough on my stomach.

Obviously, I'm not a big coffee drinker, but still I need my one cup a day to feel right. For me DD coffee tastes fine.

Starbucks is way too strong for me and it tastes more like medicine than a morning beverage. And yes hammer, it is really rough on the stomach lining.

Starbuck's milder blends are easier on the stomach. My wife has the same complaints with her stomach when drinking the bold blend. I must have an iron stomach because it doesn't bother me. I can drink an 8 oz espresso and nod off a few minutes later.

Starbucks has no adverse effects on me physically, but I think it tastes awful, and it puts a hurting on the budget.

... Theirs' can be terrific....both.. regular & weak, but often it's either over-heated or not_enough water, thus burning the coffee to some degree...or loading the caffeine-cannon...which kills a lot of their beans' flavor....and their stronger by far tastes a LOT better in the morning.
Nescafe "Goumet Roast" instant;-), surprisingly...when carefully mixed can taste great...

I am definately a coffee aprecianado(sic). 20 years ago most of the coffee out there was pretty bad but thanks to the Starbucks/Seattle led coffe revelution you can get good coffe at Starbucks and at most convenience store on the road, even McDonalds offers good coffee.

When you buy coffee at the store it should be labeled strong/medium/mild. French Roast is one of the few strong blends you will find on the shelf so if you don't like stong coffee stay away from French Roast. Except when the premium brands are on sale I usually buy 8 O'Clock brand beans, grind them at the store and I find it a great tasting medium strength cup of coffee.4 bucks vs 7/8 bucks.

I am a big fan of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, it's just up the road from me. Just like their neighbors Ben & Jerry's they are a very good company who treat their employees well, are an active partner in the community and are involved with many socially responsible programs both in Vermont and globally. It's not a small company anymore as it is a publically traded company on the stock market.

I mix approx 4 parts Starbucks French Roast with 1 part hazelnut coffee, It cuts the acidity and harshness of the Starbucks. Then I have 2-3 cups in the AM and I'm good to go.....

I'm a Green Mountain Fan too. We just got a Keurig One Cup machine at work and it's great. Makes a perfect cup. Gonna bite the bullet and buy one for home too!

They are fantastic! They also make the one cup containers for tea also. When I worked at LL Bean the only coffee available during the work day(or in my case, night) was that awful coffee out of a vending machine then last year they put in a couple of Keurig machines...what a welcome change that was. All the flavors one cup at a time!

I guess I’m reformed, I use to drink four to five cups a day. Presently, one during breakfast and maybe a second at mid morning.

What made me stop so much? My girlfriend (now wife) and other workers really enjoyed freshly roasted beans. Coffee Connection was the place we go hang out (before kids). Sometimes we would just buy the beans to bring home, grind them ourselves and then brew it in a drip cone. They would never sell coffee beans older than two weeks, that’s quality! Before Starbucks bought out Coffee Connection, you can get fresh, high quality beans anywhere in the Boston and Metro west areas. Nowadays, my choices are a few small coffee shops. What made me stop drinking so much was that I got spoiled on really good coffee, the stuff I get at work or DD and Starbucks doesn’t compare, not in a long shot.

BTW, in terms of selling out. I use to like Starbucks, but they lower their quality once they bought out Coffee Connection. I remember a time when they had offered a larger variety of beans. The freshness and quality was close to CC. All changed when they made a corporate decision to sell to the masses and compete toe to toe with Dunkin Donuts.

Jules: Mmmm! Goddamn, Jimmie! This is some serious gourmet s***! Usually, me and Vince would be happy with some freeze-dried Taster's Choice, but he springs this serious GOURMET s*** on us! What flavor is this?

Jimmie: Knock it off, Jules.

Jules: [pause] What?

Jimmie: I don't need you to tell me how f****** good my coffee is, okay? I'm the one who buys it. I know how good it is. When Bonnie goes shopping she buys S***. Me, I buy the gourmet expensive stuff because when I drink it I want to taste it.

----------------------

not a huge fan of Starbucks, especially their price tags. I can drink the mild stuff, but the strong stuff I need to load up on cream. I'm a Dunkin guy thru and thru, but the stuff Au Bon Pain is serving isn't bad, especially for $1.56 for a medium. Definitely a fan of Green Mountain's flavored stuff. I have a pound of the blueberry coffee at home right now. Good stuff.

copy/paste from IMDB, with some creative editing. I'm too lazy to type it all out, too.

I never used to drink coffee, but for the last 5 years or so I have been. I usually drink Green Mountain, it's available at convenience stores and at work. I usually do not make coffee at home, I belong to the coffee club at work and generally stop in the morning for one to save time.

Lately, I have been pulling through McD's for their iced coffee. It's Green Mountain.

I also drink tea (black) and ice tea (fresh brewed, black, no lemon)
