The soon-to-be Mrs. and I are considering going on one next year...just wondering where to start, what you recommend for cruise line/activities, etc.

I might be speaking to the wrong crowd, but I figured what the hell.

my parents went a few years ago, and I remember them telling me one of the highlights of the trip was waiting for the icebergs to foal.

You should take the one where the boat has a helicopter for heli skiing. :-D

+1 I would look into to it. The time I went on a touristy thing in alaska all I kept thinking was this is the last place all the old people go before they die.

One of my hygienists and her family just got back a week ago from one (Holland America line). She and her entire family LOVED it. Said the food was great, the scenery was spectactular and that she'd go again in a heartbeat.

My parents are going on one just after labor day - my mom went on one 4 years ago and has insisted that my dad goes this time around. She also raved about it and the fact that the scanery needs to be scene to be truely appreciated/believed. Apparently though the Alaskan Cruise market is capitalizing on The Deadliest Catch phenomena, as when my parents are going, the line their on, Princess, has a day trip where you get to go crab fishing! (My dad is apparently all over this side trip)

The only folks I've heard who haven't liked an Alaskan Cruise are those with some serious sea sickness issues

Oohhh...heli skiing. Schweet!

And any other recommendations for lines? We were looking at Carnival and Celebrity Cruises. It seems that any line charges for the day activities.n Is this the norm? And I have no idea what the difference is regarding room choices.

My folks did one this June and loved it. Flew into Anchorage, then out to Denali for a few days and then cruise the later part finishing up in Vancouver and Victoria.

I can find out the specific tour company they used, but overall they found it to be very well run. Only complaint was the ridiculous amount of travel required in getting to Anchorage.

My parents did one last summer. They loved the trip. However they and their friends they went with both felt they should have done it different. Both wish they had flown into Alaska and rented a car, and drove around. They liked the places they went and what they got to see. They just hated how structered it was. They are more of the type of people who do what THEY want. Spend a extra day in a certain town, or leave early is what they wish they had done.

Over all they did enjoy the trip.
