YORK (Reuters) - Pieces of a man's body fell from the wheel well of a South African Airways passenger plane bound for John F. Kennedy International Airport Tuesday and landed in the yard of a suburban home, police said.

A U.S. customs inspector discovered the rest of the man's body at 7:30 a.m. (1130 GMT) after Flight 203 landed in New York from Johannesburg, South Africa, said a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees area airports.

A South African Airways spokeswoman said it appeared to have been a stowaway attempt. She said the plane had stopped in Dakar, Senegal, on its way to New York.

The pilot reported feeling vibrations at takeoff but conducted a check and found nothing amiss, said Nassau County, New York, police detective Kevin Smith.

During the flight, Smith said the pilot felt more "vibrating sensations and heard pounding, but nothing appeared wrong with the plane."

The body parts, which included the right leg, part of the spine and a hip, struck a garage roof of the home in South Floral Park, New York, before landing in the backyard, police said.

I got this from another site.

Doesn't say much for airport security, does it?

In South Africa? Is anyone surprised?

Actually, considering that S. Africa has cornered the diamond market and smuggling is a concern, yes I am surprised.

I read about that in the paper. Did you see the damage the leg did to that garage? I might have mentioned it before. I live in a beach town right by JFK. An airbus crashed in my neighborhood two months after 9/11. Living close to an airport has it's conveniences, but when planes and legs are falling from the sky ......

Didn't Mythbusters do a show on stowaways? If they didn't, they should.

Super idea! Another show that is funky and alot of fun. Last one I saw they were trying to debunk the myth that cement mixer drivers use explosives to clean out old hardened cement from the mixer. In the end, they wound up blowing the whole truck up!

That's the only one I saw...never heard of Myth Busters before and it was pretty shocking. Life must have been pretty bad for someone to have taken that kind of risk...stowing away What a crappy way to go.

I think the couple seated next to me on my flight home from hiking in NC yesterday thought there was a dead stowaway in my carry-on. It poured Thursday evening before I got there (steep, slick hike down in the dark. Only 5 stream crossings. Not long, but more than I wanted to do at 4 am), huge downpour Friday afternoon, Saturday it didn't start raining until about 6 am, and didn't stop uuntil well after we were gone on Sunday. I washed up as best I could and had dry clothes in teh car, but I'm pretty sure I reaked. It was a nice trip, though.
