Arrived early, few cars in the lot. Car thermometer indicated 9 degrees F, so out came the face masks and boot gloves. Forecast was for cold and wind, which evidently scared Saturday's crowds away. The weatherman only got it partially correct though, as it snowed non-stop all day. Never waited on a lift line and got loads of great skiing. Snow guns were blowing on several trails, with artificial snow drifting around and supplementing Mother Nature's unexpected gift. A few areas had shin-deep snow, depending on which way the wind happened to be blowing. During the day upper Winisook and lower Belleayre Run were opened up. The few trails (and glades) that weren't open were getting poached anyway, e.g. Cathedral Brook, the very lowest part of Winisook and upper Algonquin (which had snow making ongoing). Upper Onteora was open with all its snowguns blowing; the artificial powder was phenomenal (the opposite of Saturday's bullet proof surface). Winisook's soft natural snow let the edges sink right in. Utsayantha and Cayuga also had sweet natural pow. We heard that Superchief quad experienced a brief windhold at 11 o'clock, but luckily we weren't on it. The 7 triple chair and Tomahawk quad spun all day. The cold weather only made it that much more enjoyable to sit by the fireplace sipping hot cocoa at day's end. All in all a fabulous day that contradicted our original expectations.
