Better deal this weekend: SR vs K-Ton

SR has updated their snow report page and is offering:

Locke Triple - T2 & Upper Sunday Punch 8:00AM-3:30PM - $39

K-Ton:
K1 Gondi & North Ridge Triple
Trails: ?? (locals, a little help?) Rime, GN, Bunny Buster, East Fall? (Tom's report said at least 4 trails). 10:00 - ??? (when do they normally stop spinning? 4:00PM?)


Aside from drive time differences, if you had to pay walk up rates, where would you go?

Who would have worse crowds? Who would have better conditions? I think the answer to both of those might be Killington, but I'm not sure.

It's a moot point for me, as I won't have time to ski this weekend, but I thought it might make an interesting discussion.

The Sunday River snowmaking team has been working hard this past week and their efforts will pay off for you this weekend as we open T2 and Upper Sunday Punch bright and early tomorrow morning. We are pushing hard to get top to bottom this weekend and will update the snow report and trail status page as soon as we get the green light! Until then, lift ticket pricing is as follow:

Kudo's to both resorts for getting early-season terrain going, but seems like the mountains should have more than 2 trails open before charging 1/2 the mid-season ticket rate. Makes a good deal for season pass holders I guess...

If you're that fixated on price, the best deal is to stay home. Neither resort will offer enough variety to last you all day. Both will offer a good product, but it is what it is.

That said I did catch opening day in '03 or '04 that was in October when they got a 2 foot dump and it was absolutely OFF the HOOK! We've talked about that day before on here.

SR is enjoyable once temps stabilize..their mountain crew is good..but this early the goods are with the altitude = K-Mart...just my $.01. Always great to get outside, but unless you have a pass, much better to save for powder day(s)...
Having said...might be fewer people willing to drive up to Bethel....

I skied that Sunday that they opened after that big dump it was closer to 3 feet as i recall. The dump was on Wednesday or mid week and cold temps thursday and Friday. It started to warm up on Sat, and even warmer on Sunday. They made snow on the low elevations to help out. It was a blast. There was so much snow in the woods that it set up and Sunday mid morning afternoon, it got soft on top. It was raining in the woods from the melt off the trees, but the peak, northridge and Snowdon areas were open. I can't remember how much it cost but it was no more than $40.00 as I recall. What a day that was.

I think SR's playing a little more trick or treat with folks. Yes, the ticket pric eis $39.00, but with tonight's cold temps and what they've already done this week snowmaking-wise, I don't buy the whole "T2 and Upper Sunday Punch" crap.

I would not be at all surprised to see, Sunday Punch, Lower Sunday Punch, Ecstacy, Jungle Road, and Right Stuff added to that trail count with the Barker HSQ coming online.

Now if Killington doesn't have a lot of folks, I think it would be fabulous, but for some reason, I think it might be a tad bit crowded.

Nonetheless, I'm glad to see K-ton push for this opening. Good for all the K skiers and rider.

Killington gives you a decent high elevation pod for the weekend. Glades triple is probably 600vf, and you get about 3 different trails, that all will have a ton of snow on them. (I'd expect you will see Upper Double Dipper open up for tomorrow) Down lower, you should have decent coverage on a full run down to the K-1, that's decent intermediate run for most of the way.

SR is giving no indication of opening more than what's listed for tomorrow, so if that's the case, I'd personally say go with K, but if they opened up more terrain, it'd become more mixed.

So what's with the drastic decrease in price from K's opening last year? Wasn't it about the same time but like $16 more to ski? Granted, I think that price was huge, but was it to try and keep the slopes less crowded?

....but the lower mountain was in way better shape. They had 3 nights to blow a white ribbon of slush on lower Bunny. At 11:00 yesterday morning, it was 12" of sludge when I tried to walk on it. It was 25F last night so it may have mostly set up but there just isn't great cover.

SR is open top to bottom today on Locke... 2 miles
Killington is 3 miles - including the slush run/carnage down to K1.

I would say it's a toss up.
