I did not miss these while in Mass....

It happens twice a year--once in the spring and once in the spring and once in the late summer. We got some rain last night and today and they are now out in full force :x

Get the windshield washer fluid ready!

Flying Ants

You're not kidding. I went to Barre (vt) last night and it sounded like people were throwing stones at my windshield. It was horrible. What a mess! and they are impervious to the washer fluid- it just smears them all over the windshield. We always called them shad flies- only because my dad did. I am going to try and find out just what their real name is.

Shad flies (aka Mayflies, I think) are one thing, flying ants are another. Ants with wings are the males heading out to find a little queen ant action. They can swarm like nobody's business. Really good time to fly fish, apparently.

I love it when mother nature throws out her power and makes it clear who really is in charge out there.

One time driving north out of Salt Lake City heading for Pocatello, ID, ran into a butterfly hatch. Not only was the windshield a mess but the roadway gets slicker than black ice.
