Bretton Woods? Yes, Bretton Woods on Superbowl Sunday. Plans were set for a visit to Cannon Mountain but after pulling into the parking lot and seeing the lines at 9:30, everything changed. Mind you I am happy Cannon is doing great this season, and as many of you know Cannon is my favorite mountain to ski at! But, the crowds were too big and we opted out.
Now where to? We thought of Monteau, a closed ski area about fifteen minutes away we would hike up and ski. Then, Nordic skiing in the Twin Mountain area. Bretton Woods came up and away we went. Bonus on this decision, $15 for locals half day! Where I live I am not considered a local, but where my girlfriend lives is! Knock it down!
To be honest I wasn’t exactly thrilled to go to Bretton Woods being all pumped up for the new snow at Cannon Mountain. BW isn’t really known for challenging terrain, but I have never skied the whole area. Actually, the only time I had skied there was four years ago in late April on limited terrain, which was a nice outing. Any day skiing is a good day!
After purchasing the tickets we were in the lodge looking at a map of the area. We started talking to another skier and said the glades were awesome. Knowing nothing about the glades there I looked forward to exploring them.
First run was off of the Zepher HSQ down Crawford’s Blaze. Nice blue square trail with great snow! I labeled it as HVPOW (heavy powder), it wasn’t POW, but it wasn’t cement mix either! You could just lean back cut through, turn and it was great! Next run was down Glade West, our first glade run. HVPOW and PP, trees not too close but a great run with small bumps to make it interesting. Over to West Mountain to ski more glades.
So here I was just an hour before thinking BW might be a little on the dull side, and now I have this huge smile on my face! Boundary Line Glades off the West Mountain Express rocked! Between their base and the previous nights snow this trail was a blast! Trees a bit closer and a rock drop off to boot. The drop off was only between three and five feet, but that started you on a descent pitch complete with some bumps to pop off of. From there over to Wild West Glade which had freestyle terrain as well. Great snow! Repeated that run four times.
On West Mountain we skied Maple Woods Glade, John Grave’s Glade, same results, great snow nice tree skiing. They’re not the longest trails or have the steepest pitch, but were well worth it!
With ten or so runs under our belt we headed over to Rosebrook Canyon Glades. We were told that these are the really good glades at BW. They lived up to their hype with all of this snow! Enchanted Bear, Inferno, Lazy Man's, hit them twice each. Great snow, pretty good challenge! Wanted to do the Stickney glades but were pretty tired by now. Called it a day with a final run down Perimeter, Water Tank, and Downspout Glade.
Looking forward to exploring some more at BW........... after my Cannon fix later this week with the new snow!
