Talk about an honest snow report:

http://skibutternut.com/mountain/snow-report.html#

Note especially:

Opening weekend will see early season conditions with varying coverage. There will be a narrow strip of snow running down each trail with a minimal base running up to 18". We will not see edge-to-edge coverage so please use caution on the trails and respect others' space.
Photo Caption: Main Street on Friday. If we do open Saturday there will be limited time to make snow and trails will most likely look like this. The snow is at most, 35 feet wide right now. The Snow Making Team is working hard on what they do best.

It's snowing and Ski Butternut just made the decision to open for skiing and snowboarding on Saturday & Sunday Dec 3-4th.
We'll be skiing on Nuthatch, Main Street & the beginner hill for a total of 3 trails. This is 3 out of 22 trails which is typical at the start of the season. Snowmaking will be in operation whenever conditions permit. We plan to add additional trails for next weekend.
We are advising guests to "Be aware and ski with care" as the trails are not covered edge to edge.
The Main Street quad & Paddy Wagon double lift will be in operation from 8:15a.m to 4 p.m.

Lift passes are value priced at only $15 this Sat. and Sun., this is due to the limited terrain available.

PLEASE NOTE - We'll be closed Mon. - Thurs. to intensify snowmaking on the currently open trails and shore them up prior to our snowmaking team moveing on to open additional trails.

We plan to reopen Friday Dec. 9th and expect to be open 7 days a week from that point on.

Our web site www.SkiButternut.com offers a detailed snow conditions report and a daily picture.

Ski Butternut Season Passes, 3-Packs of Lift Tickets and Gift Certificates are still available but act soon as quantities are limited. Order online at www.SkiButternut.com or call 413-528-2000 x 111 9-4 daily.

Location
NY burbs
I hit it Sunday early - skied 8:15 - 1:30. Two "white ribbons of death" - but not that bad in terms of crowding until 12:30, and even then it was manageable. The good manmade base on 1/2 of Main Street got an additional boost from a few inches of natural accumulation, so it could be skied side to side, with the natural side kind of sketchy. Tons of ski patrol / instructors doing their training.

Highlight of the day - lots of teen snowboarder types were out showing off their flashy new duds and gear. From the lift, I saw one of them jump at pretty decent speed over a rope closing off the top of the natural snow side of Main Street. Cool, but I wondered, what would happen if he didn't make that rope? On my next lift ride, we both found out - he tried the jump again and caught the rope and wiped out in a BIG way. What a great spectator event.
