Trip Report:
On Sunday I met some friends to ski ar Butternut in Great Barrington. The day before the area had received rain and freezing rain on and off for most of the day and a light coating of snow in the overnight period. Considering the weather we had the day before and the warm daytime and cold night time temperatures we had during the week, the conditions were great.
Shortly after arriving, as we were heading toward the lift for our first run, we ran into skijay who was skiing (actually blading) alone and he joined us. I had skied with skijay last year at Blandford on a NELSAP trip so we recognized each other.
We headed up the quad...first on our list, taming Lucifer's Leap. It was a nice run, but not as challenging as other diamonds I have skied. From there we ventured to The "Granny's" lift and old center pole double. Our plan was to ski the mountain from left to right and back again. As we rode up Granny's grease dripped from the cables and towers. When we got to the top we attempted to wipe it from our coats. It came off of all coats except mine ( a yellow and black coat). We decided we had seen enough of the "Granny's" lift area and scrapped our plan. I went to the office to get advice on how to safely remove the grease from my coat, skijay came with me as he was familiar with the area. Bonni and Jeff continued to the yellow double and took a run while we were in the office. Later, we joined them at the yellow double and from there made our way over to the triple.
After skiing until about 1 we decided that it was time to take a lunch break. We went into the larger lodge. It was nice but crowded. We had a hard time finding a place to sit. Fortunately, a woman and her small children was preparing to leave a table so we took it. As this woman was leaving she told us that there was a bag on the table and she had moved it if anyone came in looking for it. While Bonni and Jeff were in line getting their food the woman returned. She was rather indignant and yelled at me for sitting at her table and moving her stuff. "That's my table." She grabbed her bag and strutted off. We all had a good laugh over this.
After eating we returned to the slopes and took a few more runs with skijay and then he had to leave. We continued to ski until about 3:30 and then packed it in for the day. Lucifer's Leap, the one we started on, was the run we chose to end our day on. All-in-all it was a great day of skiing. It was great to see skijay again and I am glad he was able to join our little group.
