FRANCONIA, New Hampshire -- From first-time skiers and snowboarders to experienced schussers, the Cannon Mountain Snowsports School offers a variety of programs to help you make the most of your time on the hill this winter.
For those looking to get on the slopes for the first time, the Snowsports School offers a First Timers Package, which includes a lift ticket to the beginner Brookside area, rental equipment, and a group lesson for new skiers or snowboarders.
"The goal for the lesson is to get the person skiing or riding on Brookside," said Irv Fountain, director of the Cannon Snowsports School. "If this isn't accomplished during the lesson, the instructor can suggest a second lesson at no additional cost."
Cannon also offers 90-minute group lessons daily to adults of all skiing and riding abilities. And for speedsters, the Snowsports School offers weekend instruction in racing for adults.
A Cannon favorite, said Fountain, are the day camps for children – Cannon Kids for ages 4-7 and Mountain Explorers for ages 8-12. Both are offered as half-day or full-day programs.
"These programs are extremely popular," he says. "More and more parents are taking advantage of the full-day option."
The two-and-a-half-hour sessions begin at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. The full-day option includes lunch at the Brookside Learning Center. Students are grouped by age and ability. Rental equipment is also available at the Brookside center.
Cannon regulars may participate in the season-long Junior Development program, for skiers and riders ages 4-12. Kids ski with the same instructor throughout the season on weekends and vacation days for two or three hours, depending on age.
For the tots not quite big enough for snow sliding, daycare is also provided at Brookside for kids from 6 weeks to 12 years old, so Mom and Dad can get some time on the slopes.
The Cannon Snowsports School boasts 115 instructors, including two PSIA examiners. Many instructors return to the program each season, and all complete training throughout the winter.
Cannon Mountain has 60 trails, 9 lifts, and terrain for all ability levels. Cannon has the longest vertical drop and the highest lift-served terrain in New Hampshire. With New Hampshire's only aerial tramway, Cannon is located directly off I-93 in Franconia Notch State Park.
