Continental Grand Prix Tire

BK.jpg

The Continental Grand Prix Tire is one of those timeless products that helped define the modern racing bicycle through its innovative clincher design. Since its inception in the late '80s, the Grand Prix has been significantly refined using advanced rubber compounds and an updated puncture protection system, but its proven overall construction continues to lead the clincher pack in delivering the supple ride quality and low rolling-resistance once only available in a tubular design.
The Continental Grand Prix tire's three-ply, multi-layer casing wears a similar makeup to its Grand Prix 4000 big brother, with the main differences being that the Grand Prix features fewer threads-per-inch (180) and carries a few extra grams. But that's to be expected, as for roughly half the price, the Grand Prix was designed to be the ultimate all-around tire " not strictly a superlight race-day rubber.
As with the 4000s, the Grand Prix possesses Continental's revered Black Chili rubber compound, which was first developed for the Moto GP racing circuit before crossing over into cycling tires. Essentially, super-tiny carbon black particles are incorporated into the rubber formula, which allows them to mold to the road surface more readily. It gives the tire greater ability to conform to imperfections in the road surface. Also, better contact with the road equates to better grip in demanding situations such as high speed cornering. And since the Black Chili particles are so small, more particles fit into the contact patch of the tire " reducing tire wear and increasing tire longevity.
Underneath the outer casing is a puncture-resistant layer called PolyX Breaker. This is a dense, woven layer of tough polyester, designed to add serious flat protection. Additionally, because this layer is lightweight and flexible, it doesn't negatively affect the overall rolling-resistance of the tire.
The Continental Grand Prix Tire is available as a 700c x 23mm clincher and in the color Black.
