The Cobalt XC Wheelset is like nothing you've ever seen, which is no surprise coming from Crank Brothers. Looks have never been a problem for the wunderkind design house of cycling, but looks mean nothing when function is lacking. Thankfully, function comes first for this company, and the Cobalt is proof. First off, there are no holes in the rim walls, only a raised inner rib into which the spoke ends fit. That fact alone dramatically increases wheel strength, but it also simplifies building and truing. The spokes extend from the rim to the hub, where the elongated nipples meet them in the center (are you starting to freak out yet?) to create super-strong jointed spokes that exert minimal strain on the threading. The 6-pawl, oversized hubs are specially machined for light weight, and feature a split quick-release skewer design for easier, ultra-secure closures. The stronger spokes and precise integration with the hubs allows a 24-spoke build, keeping the Cobalt at a mere 1540g per set. Stiffness, strength, and weight are optimized, and the result is a killer XC race wheelset that not only looks the part, but plays it beautifully.
