Ski Resort: Crotched Mountain

Conditions: Spring, warm, sunny - High 40's

Report: Today I made my way out to Crotched, figuring I was going to have to burn a vacation day to deal with the housing issues. Luckily, I got finished at my house around 12, so a couple of hours at the Crotch were well in order! What a magnificent day! It was ski all day (since it was a midweek day) and there was nobody here except me and the ski instructors. While I did pay for a full price half-day ticket, it was worth every penny of it. The new Crotch Rocket is a great addition to the hill, and this was the first time in about 8 years I have skied here. Views were picture perfect, and here are a few pictures to feast on:

Depending on how fast one goes (safely), 16 to 20 runs can be made in 2 hours. At 860 vertical per ride, 2 hours can feel like a whole day to some!

Does management give you a hard time for saying 860 vert when they advertise a thousand?

The rocket is an exceptional chair for sure.

Coverage was really amazing for so late in the season. Unfortunately the sign at the base of the CrotchRocket said "5 more days left in the season". With the ra*n, non-existant crowds and etc... Hard to say they will open the weekend of Passover/Easter.

I checked the vertical out with a GPS a couple years ago and US Geological Survey Maps confirm the 860' number. I know CM's management reads AZ, and they have never asked me to "cease and desist".

There are many areas that overstate their vertical and in most cases, it's when it's close to the next 1000. Among the other exaggerators are Wachusett, Stratton and Waterville. Jay Peak and Saddleback may be in that category also!

There was actually a reasonable crowd here yesterday. The local scuttlebutt is that CM will be open on Sat., Apr. 4 (but NOT Easter Sunday).

Sounds like Crotched's operations potential after this weekend is in tune with what many Peak Resorts do late season.... If they have a decent crowd this weekend AND the forecast for next weekend looks decent, then they'll probably spin the lifts. If the crowds aren't there this weekend and/or Easter weekend looks wet, proverbially speaking the fat lady will sing this Sunday ;)

CM didn't open today because of last night's weather and this afternoon's forecast. I did climb to the top and took a run. It was beautiful spring "butter snow" that would quickly turn to corn with a bit of traffic. I suspect management made a good economic decision, but it has been beautiful here since 9AM to this moment (about 12:45PM).
