Lookin' for some recommendations on a nice day trip from southern NH to the coast...anyplace that's about 2 hours from me. Hoping you guys might suggest some place we've never been. Would like to take some kind of a walk and have something to eat at a place that's on the waterfront.

This is for Sunday the 18thof April, so points south might be better than Maine.

Plum Island in Newburyport. While not on the beach, Bob Lobster on the Causeway out there has one of the best Lobster Rolls around.

Short distance off the beach is Plum Island Grill. Great restaurant. Doesn't have ocean views, but does have views of the tidal flats.

You want lots of people or solitude? Cranes beach is beautiful and uncrowded. Near Ipswich which is a cool town and has good eats.

Higgins is my favorite Beach South of Portland.

Reid and Popham Beach north of Portland are hands down the two most beautiful beaches I've seen anywhere in New England.

2 hours will put WakeboardMom at Horseneck Beach in Westport, Ma. That's likely to be far warmer than anything east of her. Good road all the way. Route 88 from I-195 in Fall River is a straight 50 mph road

The nearby restaurant is called the Back Eddy. You're looking out at Westport Harbor. The food is good. The locals complain about the prices but it's in line with southern NH.

In these budget cutback days, the Horseneck parking lots might not be open yet. From the Back Eddy parking lot, you can walk to the private Baker's Beach that abuts the state beach. on the west side Nobody cares at this time of year. ...or you can go to the east end of the state beach at Gooseberry Neck, park on the causeway, and walk from there. I think there's still a biker bar there that's worth a stop to check out the local color.

Here's a Google Maps link:

We're gonna save this 'til it's a bit warmer; but I checked it out online and they both look fabulous. Thank you!!

The biker bar plus a nice walking area definitely puts this into contention. Thank you.

Right now it looks like we're going to Block Island. Plans are to be out of the house by 6; drive to Point Judith and take the 9:00 ferry. Will rent bikes when we get there and do some exploring. Late lunch/early dinner and we'll catch the 6:00 ferry back to RI.

This pleases both of us, because getting on a boat, even the ferry, will make him very happy. : - )

Wow! Wouldn't have thought to recommend that since it's outside the travel distance you indicated but good choice! We just had Rhode Island's Poet Laureate do a reading last week for my Wed class and she runs an inn on Block Island. Have fun!

If anybody would understand, you guys would. It's the same schedule many folks would have for a day trip for skiing.

Absolutely understand! We keep meaning to get to Block Island, actually, which is of similar drive distance from our area of the state... but haven't made it yet. Maybe this summer.

I'm sure you looked into this already, but I believe Block Island is somewhat a seasonal place.

If you are willing to drive to Pt. Judith, Newport and\or Jamestown, RI are two other options.
