Heard the story this morning, sounded like a crash into the woods. No other details. Freaky - I was there Thursday. I was at Killington the day before there was a death there this year. Not trying to take away from the seriousness of this but you guys better stop following me around........................................................

Maybe not with Reefer but on reefer.....

Nice.............I gotta get rid of this name, been with me since highschool ( I was a straight A student wise guys......). Thought it was funny and maybe it wasn't called that anymore - but may give the wrong impression at this point in my life............let me try this, it worked on my mother beleive it or not - "they call me reefer cause of my swimming skills in the ocean like a fish along the coral reef". It was actually "keefer" which led to "reefer". I don't know why..................................................Keith.

P.S. I think your reply is great, don't take me the wrong way. I love many of your short, to the point, replys.

I was at Cannon on Saturday. There were some soft areas on the lower mountain (i.e., the stuff off the Zoomer chair), but a lot of the mountain was "loud powder". It wasn't spring corn / slush by any means. There were some signifigant bare areas and some blue ice areas. All of that would have gotten covered by the Saturday night snowfall. Looks like (from Cannon's snow-report page) that they got about 2". Somebody could have easily lost control when their skis hit something unexpected lurking underneath the new snow.

That last sentence is speculation on my part. I wasn't there on Sunday, and I wasn't aware that this had occurred at all until a friend called me this morning to ensure that the death she had heard about wasn't me. My condolences to the family of the deceased.

I left the MT before this accident but talked to few people this morning. They believe it was a 30 something male that went into the woods entering Spooky, which is a very flat connecting trail.Patrol asked a few a my friends if they could drive this guys friend home to the Manchester area.I'm trying to contact some people to see if I can get more info.I'll post more when it becomes available.
By the way Kevin,Cannon only got about an inch which was just enough to cover all the bare spots.

i have a friend who's knickname is Spleve...
It's not from the word "splif" or "spleef" as some think.. He got the name because he was in a car wreck and had to have his spleen operated on..
And we combined his name Steve with spleen... Spleve...

I know there's that not-very-hidden old-lift-line (I think that's what it is) "trail" that's on your left about half-way down Spooky's. Was somebody trying to ski that and hit a tree? Or did they miss the entrance to Spooky's? That's about the last place on the mountain I would have guessed a fatal accident could occur.

If your friend drove him home, couldnt you just ask your friend who it was?

I don't have his number.I see him every weekend at the MT.Anyway,it turns out it's nobody that I know. His name was John O'Hara Sullivan from Manchester age 38.Most of his family does not live in the area.He had one stepbrother that was in the area and a brother that lives in Breckenridge Colorado. His obit said he was an avid outdoors guy, enjoying hiking, skiing, biking and dirtbikes. His stepdad said he would try everything and didn't hold himself back.I was told he did have a helmet on.I'm headed up to Cannon tonite so hopefully I'll get more info on what happened from Patrol and the Mt manager who are friends.Sad to see fellow skiers die but if have to go....well.

Skier's death at Cannon Mountain probed

12 hours, 14 minutes ago

FRANCONIA – A Manchester man who died when he hit a tree while skiing Sunday at Cannon Mountain, was wearing a helmet when the accident occurred, officials at the mountain said yesterday.

Officials said the 39-year-old skied off an intermediate trail about 2 p.m. He was skiing with another person, they said.

Franconia Police Chief Mark Montminy declined to identify the victim pending notification of next of kin.

Cannon Mountain Ski Patrol provided medical treatment and took the skier to the base where he was taken via ambulance to Littleton Regional Hospital.

This was the first and only fatal accident at the state-owned mountain this year, a spokesman said. The man was not a season pass holder nor was it immediately clear what level of skiing ability he posessed or what his familiarity was with the ski area.

The trail the man was skiing on is called "Spookie." It is an intermediate trail, 776 feet long connecting Middle Link and Middle Cannon near the base of the Cannonball Express Quad Chair.

"We are still waiting for our in house investigation report for some information," said Amy Bassett, spokesman.

Sunday the conditions were spring-like and there was light traffic in the afternoon.

Alcohol or drugs are not believed to have been an issue in the death.

Final Word

Ok,this is the word straight from the patrolman that responded. He told me that according to the victim's friend that was following him, they headed into Spooky at a pretty fast speed. His friend said that after entering the trail,it appeared that Sullivan turned his head to look behind and see if his friend was following him.Apparently right after this he veered off the trail and hit a tree.He suffered massive internal and possibly a broken neck. They did have a red maker on the tree as of Sunday. It turns out one of my friends knew him only from his work as a courier.Pretty sad.
