So Ms. TB and I are hoping to spend two nights at Sunday River and are hoping to get up to Sugarloaf during our stay. Have any of you traveled between the two? Any route suggestions? How much time will this take?

back in the day i drove to the loaf on non work days at the river. The drive is approx. 2 hours, but nice driving with no traffic. If the roads are good then take 2 to 17 to 16. 17 gets pretty bad with frost heaves. also 2 to 142 to 16. If there's bad weather take 2 to farmington and pick up 16 there. gotta luv those quality maine highways.

2 hours?! I had heard it was about 1:30.

o.k maybe 1hr 45min. maybe. less than that you better go really fast. Frost heaves usually keep me under 65. if driving at night on 17 or 142 watch out for wildlife (moose). Other than that the drive is totally worth it. Like i said over half of the time i had the day off i took the drive.

p.s. there really are no rules on 17. watch out on 2.

The fastest is to go rt2 to Farmington, then pick up 27. That will take you right to the Loaf. It should be about 1:30- 1:45 if there is no snow on the roads. Have a great weekend.

*scratches head* I'm pretty sure we used to plan on 1.5 hrs in the academy vans from Bethel and beat that time when we got good weather and clear roads. It does make for a long day, but it's not nearly as long as a day trip to Saddleback from Bethel.

(I've never actually driven it, so I can't recall the actual route, sorry. I do remember that there are at least two semi-questionable shortcuts that make a lot of sense so long as you're comfortable hauling butt on questionable roadways but not much if you're reasonably cautious.)

I did the drive just last week. Route 2 to 142, to 27 took 1:30. In fact, we got back from SL just in time to take a couple at SR before the lifts closed... That was moving along at a "good" pace on 142. I would avoid the route 2 to 27 in farmington route (more traffic, more time). The route 17 way has very nice views and should also be about 1:30-1:45.

I did the RT 2 to 27 way last week and it took 2 hours there and 1:50 to get back. 93 miles and lots of logging trucks.

jc...more traffic thru Farmington...eh'?
tb,
Hey as mentioned...#2 to the big city of Farmington;-)....just stay on the main drag thru town(which is actually #4) and #27--> which you stay on as you bear right with (to Kingfield) after making your way all of Farmington, then it's all straight..to the mountain access road.
*Take heed of Farmington's 40mph speed limit..(it's often watched/patrolled)...same with narrow 45mph road that follows the Carrabassett R. as you start climbing towards the mountain....
