Chess is a game- no physical compnent, per the definition. Unless it's Harry Potter-style Wizard Chess, or if you start throwing pieces at each other. Then it's a sport.

Now what about timed chess?

You must have some physical agility and hand-eye coordination.

My point being is that the last definition you gave of "sport" is far too loose.

Bear in mind this isn't the first time I've wanted to rewrite something in the dictionary. That obviously should be my new job. :dunce:

Just because an activity has a physical aspect to it does not make its participants athletes. Things like golf, bowling, darts etc. all require a degree of skill, but it’s a long way from marathon running, mountain climbing, skiing etc. IMO if there is no element of conditioning required it’s a game not a sport. In other words, if you don’t work up a sweat it’s a game.

I like open wheel stuff..
Indy, CART, Formula One...

naah, it's all about the fenders.

Yeah.... not getting into this one.. Open wheel vs. NASCAR is worse then snowboard vs. skiing or Ford vs. Chevy...

Given all of the previous definitions, my favorite sport is obviously sex.

Hear, hear!

Yes we know...we've seen your wife.

Anyway, I'll pick that as my favorite sport as well...now as for the conditioning/training part.....

EDIT: Hey can we count that and downhill as bi-atholon event?

There could be the Gondi competition..I wonder how you would judge the event?

interesting story on cnn.com today about this very topic. Are Drivers Really Athletes?

All true...try sitting in a car going 200 MPH while resisting 3-4 G's every lap and losing about 10-15 lbs per race in a cockpit that regularly exceeds 140 degrees F.

Not really a NASCAR fan, but those guys are tough and athletic too.

Just to throw a 3rd hat in the ring, I'll take NHRA over either open wheel or stockers.

Love the straight line acceleration and flames belching from open headers.

Soapbox Derby racing beats NASCAR, NHRA, and F1 in to the dirt. Lawnmower racing though, now that's a Man's sport.

I can't remember which magazine I read this in, but it was one of those Maxim, or Men's Health or whatever magazines that listen top world athletes.

Seth Morrison - the world's #1 extreme skier was in the list. His segments with Matchstick films are amazing - if he is not an athlete, I don't know who is. He might be Wolverine because he taken unbelievable hits doing flips and lincoln loops off 80-100 foot cliffs and doesn't break anything.

Chris Davenport - another extreme skier would definitely be up there. He is a competitive extreme skier, a competitive mountain biker, leads tour de france amateur tours, has clibmed a top 10 tallest mountain the world and skied down it.

Of course these two guys are no athletes compared to the baseball players jacked up on sterios.
