From the 1937 WPA Vermont Guide:
"The year 1816, “the famine year” or “eighteen hundred and froze to death”, brought the greatest physical hardships that the inhabitants of this state have ever known. On June 8 a foot of snow fell and blew into drifts two and three feet high. There was a little snow in July and August and a heavy frost on September 10. Almost no crops were harvested that fill. Much of the livestock in the State perished..."
