A lady told be recently that she likes all music except bebop. Weeks later, I'm still pondering that one....

Some older people don't like Bebop because it's too improvisational and vastly different from the swing era.,
It changed jazz... Bands got smaller due to lot's of muscians fighting WWII as well as "entertainment taxes" that force music to smaller venues...

Players like Gillespie, Parker, Getz, Powell, and Monk all changed soloing by switching and substituing chords and crazy harmonies that people weren't used to..

The cool thing for me as a drummer about Bebop is it changed drumming... Drummers like Max Roach started playing more to the melody by using accents on the snare or the bass(dropping the bomb)...

I love Bebop... It's my favorite Jazz form...
Cool Jazz being my least favorite...

Thanks, I mean it.

I wasn't too sure what bebop was. Usually when discussing music with folks here in New Hampshire I get the I like everything but rap line which usually reeks a little bit of bigotry in its tone.

It's likely that you are right on the mark. I wasn't sure with this particular person whether she had substituted bebob for hiphop and did not dare query it either.

I don't have my jazz terms right I guess. When in Florida a few years ago we were staying at pretty nice condo. Most of the day by the pool it was quiet. Suddenly all of the pool waterfall features spring to life and cheesy disco-jazz saturates the area from little speakers in the landscaping. Freakin' elevator music. The bus full of time-share victims shows up & tours the place. When they left the music went away and the pool calmed down.

Is that smooth jazz?

Is that smooth jazz?

Smooth Jazz is a downtempo jazz that uses a formula of around 100 beats per minute..
Rythms are generally synthesized along with samples.,,, You'll often hear a higher pitched saxaphone as the solo insturment...

In the 70's it was bands like Spyro Gyra, George Benson,David Sanborne, Lee Ritenour etc...

But then in the late 80's it became easy for bands to setup a drum machne and solo,, Thats when I started seeing the "Smooth Jazz" radio format - which has lot's of vovals... Which I hate... It got way too overproduced... Every song started to soung formulmatic.

crap...

There's also Urban Jazz which uses hiphop elements... Like Trip Hop...
