any one else using the live bookmark feature of firefox to obtain news headlines? both alpine zone and first tracks online have skiing news RSS feeds. ski vt-l recently added one as well. and the latest version of firefox comes loaded with BBC news headlines as a live bookmark. firefox continues to impress! i just found a livejournal extension that is similar to the previously discussed BBCode extension. this browser is redefining the web browsing experience!

I've never really played with it. I get the RSS feeds in myYahoo where I check the news every morning. The news from here I ussually just check in the forums anyway though. I have found the FTO RSS feed to be usefull though. :D

love firefox

Thanks to you guys I downloaded Firefox about 6 momnths ago...it works great! I use the Live Bookmarks if I happen to need to bounce from a few diferent sites quickly. I LOVE the live stock ticker!!!

I only have to hear the daily complaints from my teenagers who use IE or AOL on their machines to appreciate having it.

I'm one of the ones who chose...

what's a live bookmark. :-?

And my next question would have to be why?

I do have the rss info linked to My Yahoo. I've had it linked for well over a year and have clicked on stories less than 10 times. Why would I want this on my browser? :-?

How would it work?

Will I remember to come back here to check for answers? :-?

Lostone, the Live Bookmark allows you to Bookmark a RSS Feed just like you would bookmark a web page. the difference is it bookmarks the RSS feed as a folder, and when you expand the folder you see the most recent articles bookmarked below. it's 'live' in the sense that the articles keep changing within your bookmark folder as the content does.

additionally, firefox has a feature that puts the live bookmark above the 'tabs' field, so you can view the RSS feeds by clicking on a tab, then a drop down menu lists the articles.

here's what it looks like:

But then my browser would be going to those sites to check for news without my telling it to?

I clicked on one of the rss feeds from Alpine Zone at My Yahoo, today and half of the article was an advertisement.

So if I enabled this my browser would be going to other sites to get spam?

Nope... I'll keep it on My Yahoo and only have it hit my browser when I want to see what is up.

nope, it just pulls the headlines in a bookmark format. clicking the Live Bookmark would be the same as clicking the link on my yahoo. the only difference is you don't have to go to my yahoo (and view ads on my yahoo!) to do it ;)

No ads in my MyYahoo. ;) Of course thats because its part of my SBC DSL package. Going to MyYahoo isn't a problem for me because thats where I get almost all my email from anyway... :)

I finally figured out how to get FireFox to recognize AZ News as having an RSS feed and put that little orange Live Bookmarks icon
screen-firefox-rss-icon.png
in the bottom-right corner:

I'm feeling pretty dumb, because I don't see the
screen-firefox-rss-icon.png
icon anywhere on that page, nor do I have the slightest idea how to use Live Bookmarks. I don't see myself using them anyway, but it bothers me that I can't... :(

if you have the latest firefox, go to:
Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks

then a new window pops up and:
File > New Live Bookmark

insert the info and you're set.

Well something is screwed up here because I don't even have anything in the menu bar for the Manage Bookmark window... must be my crazy themes and customizations...

sure you have 1.0.7 firefox?

Yup, I keep up with the updates since they made it so easy! ;) (I just double checked too...) I messed with the userChrome.css file to get the appearance just right. I used it to get rid of the File menu from my browser window since I never use it, I guess that killed the File menu in the dialog windows as well...

Here's what it looks like if you're curious:
