And A-Basin makes it by a nose! I've waited all summer for this one.

From www.skinet.com

"Arapahoe Basin opened today, winning the title of first to open for the 2006-07 season. They offered skiers and riders an 18-inch base, 1,200 vertical feet, and three terrain features in High Divide Terrain Park."

Wow... A-Basin beat Loveland. First, Killington got beat last year by *cough* Okemo *cough*, and now Loveland is beaten for the first time in a long time.

I'd hardly consider that October snowstorm a true opening. They only made it two days (and were still beat to even that). I think the November 19th opening was the "true" openign since it was the normal manmade snow opening. Killington got beat by a mountain 20 miles south and about half the elevation.

First of all, that's one of the most asinine intepretation of opening I have ever heard.... How granular do you want to break down a "real" opening as? "Well, uh, they didn't really open cause there was no man-made snow involved, so uh, it doesn't count."

On that storm Killington received more natural snow than Okemo. Obviously you didn't know this, but they actually made quite a bit of snow prior to opening that day around the base area and high traffic zones so that they actually could drop the ropes and not be hitting bedrock by lunch time....

Not that this argument is even worthwhile because the American Ski Company has made it loud and clear they aren't even going to enter the first to open and last to close competition anymore. But mother nature was very welcoming in October last year and they opened before Okemo... sorry.

An opening is an opening...In November of 1999...Stowe and Sugarbush received 3 feet of snow..and most of the terrain was open at both mountains including the woods for 4-5 days..then warmth set in and it was down to an icy ribbon of death..it's not often you can ski Paradise and Goat..opening day...and an all natural snow base on normal snowmaking trails...Wow..you don't even want to know how hyper I was to finish a Thursday AM exam and get yo to Stowe for the opening day...it was insane,,and I think I got a C..and made it to the hill by 11:30AM for sloppy seconds...Holla

I think the whole being first to open thing is a joke. Especialy when it all melts days later. Not that I don't like getting in some early turns.
