Yeah she was fortunate plus she was lucky she knew what to do by turning and facing it. Even though the bear became angrier after she punched it and threw the rock, this showing of her strength might have been what prevented the bear attacking again. Definitely should have had bear mace! She is a cutie.
A family I know was charged last summer by two bears at once while hiking in N. VT on land right near me. They made the mistake of running, but were fortunate to have their dog with them who was able to scare the bears away. I had never seen them so shaken when they described the experience.
