So I actually ended up picking up a GoPro yesterday while at Wachusett. I'd like to record some upcoming AZ events and rekindle the official AlpineZone Youtube channel.

I haven't really played with the camera yet other than to take a short video of the dogs but I'm excited to try it out. The menu system sure is kludgy though, and that is on the Hero 2 which is supposedly much improved from the original Hero.

This thing looks cool to me though:

Coming out in March, let's you apparently control from a phone with live video streaming. I think Contour released something similar last year but this will remove hopefully that annoying "Shit Skiers Say" meme, "Is it on? Is it on?? Is the light on??"

Be interesting to see what people do with this, apparently you can control up to 50 gopros with it at once !

Hopefully cost is not too bad.

Wi-Fi-enable your HD HERO2 or original HD HERO camera with the Wi-Fi BacPac™ and Wi-Fi Remote.

The Wi-Fi BacPac attaches to your HD HERO2 camera to enable long range video remote control via the Wi-Fi Remote or a smartphone, tablet, or computer running a free GoPro App. Waterproof and durable, the Wi-Fi Remote enables complete control of up to 50 HD HERO2 cameras at a time.

When paired with the Wi-Fi BacPac, the HD HERO2 also supports live video streaming and remote control via smart-devices, computers and the Web wherever Wi-Fi or a mobile hotspot is present. Record one video stream to your HD HERO2′s SD card while sending a second video stream via Wi-Fi to your smart-device, computer or the Web.

The original HD HERO is also compatible with the Wi-Fi BacPac and Wi-Fi Remote with support for remote control functions only. Video streaming is not available on the original HD HERO camera.

One thing I have heard about the gopro is its great hardware wise, but once you get to offloading the video and using the software aspect it can get to be sort of a headache.

Have you encountered that?

@gmcunni, just the standard mounts now, I might get that Chest mount that Brian has as I'm gonna feel at least somewhat like a tool with the thing on my head.

@zakyr, the video comes off easily, just pull the Mp4 files from via USB. Really straightforward. I'm not worried about editing too much as I've done some basic stuff before and I run Sony Vegas Movie Studio here.

I don't recall the GoPro coming with any software of it's own. IIRC it's up to the user to edit it with their own software. So any software related complaints can hardly be attributed to GoPro. That said the HD files are rather large, and if you don't have a decent computer they can really bog it down.

Agree with bvibert, there's no software with the GoPro. The files are easy enough to manipulate, but they are big.

GoPro does have software just not bundled with camera. I haven't tried it yet, it's only for the Hero 2. It's called, "CineForm Studio"
