Gore Mountain Advice?

I'm considering a trip to Gore Mountain for the MLK weekend. I live in NYC and don't own a car. I could rent one, but I am considering mass transit—either Amtrak to Fort Edward or the bus service offered by Adirondack Trailways.

Both options are mentioned on the Gore Mountain website, but it's not clear how one gets around in that area without a car. There clearly is no lodging right at the mountain itself, though a couple of hotels mention a free shuttle.

Has anyone tried this, or know if it's a rational thing to attempt?

There are shuttles from Downtown North Creek to the hill. I would take the bus and stay at the copperfield. You wont need a car if you stay there. Everything to do is right in front of you. The bus from NYC will drop you right near the copperfiled. BYOB

I've stayed just about everywhere at Gore and I think black mtn ski lodge is the best deal.around 90 bucks for 2.decent restaurant too, coupla local micros on tap.maybe 5 miles away.nothing fancy but just fine for a night.Inn at gore is closer(the closest motel) about the same price but a little funkier.I've stayed there no problem but it is old school adirondacks, if you wanna be close this is it.sometimes the copperfield offers deals but rarely.nicest place up there.any ?s feel free to ask

how's Gore skiing? i see alot of stuff closed on the report....

This time of year they do not open certain lift pods midweek. Weekends are usually fully open as long as there is coverage. On Saturday almost everything was open except some of the glades and 2 trails that I saw around noon - Chatiemac and Rumor + Twister was closed for racing. Conditions were excellent with zero liftlines. With the snow and cold this week I would expect Gore to have full coverage next weekend.

Another food and beverage choice is Basil & Wick's on Rt 28 in North Creek. It used to be Casey's. I was there this weekend and the food and service were excellent.

looks good but why so much terrain closed?

Two possible explanations: (1) they seem to close lower-traffic terrain pods midweek to save money on operations; (2) they are the most conservative decent-sized resort I have ever skied in terms of opening terrain with borderline conditions. We were up there a couple weekends ago, and they had roped off *everything* that hadn't been groomed. Conditions off trail were a little crusty and manky, but a lot of the closed areas could have been enjoyable with a little skier traffic. Make sure at least some of the glades and more interesting trails will be open.

There are always money issues at Gore. There are probably under 100 people skiing and Gore's layout prevents 1 or 2 lifts from covering most of the mountain. It is a real bummer for people who are up there during the week. I spoke with a midweek skier this weekend who said there are times in Jan and Feb when the lift operators tell him he is the only one using the lift.

The opposite of Gore for lift coverage is Stratton. They have a ton of lifts and acres but could open almost all of the terrain with the Gondola, Ursa6, and the Sunrise6. They also open the AmEx6 out of the base to cover the lower mtn. Gore usually opens the Gondola, Top Ridge, and Straightbrook but that only covers about 1/2 the terrain.
