Read yesterday that a land swap adjacent to Gore Mtn. will allow significant expansion potential into North Creek. Any beta/opinion from the Adorondak crowd?

Not that I am planning on skiing there, it's just that I find it unusuall for the State of N.Y. or anyone for that matter , given the current economic climate and the warming climate, to be dumping significant amounts of money into a ski project.

Guess Gore must be making NYS a somewhat decent operational profit! ;)

In all seriousness, probably just a strategic move for potential future development when fiscal times are better.

This is mostly a private developer building a huge year-round community at Gore. This is not new news. It got approvals from the State and has been on-going.

http://www.stamfordadvocate.com/ci_11987936

A Darien developer has swapped pieces of property with a municipality in upstate New York as part of its plan to create a new ski village in the Adirondacks.

FrontStreet Mountain Development LLC has given an 11.45-acre parcel it bought in 2005 to the town of Johnsburg, N.Y., in exchange for eight acres of land adjacent to Gore Mountain, a state-owned ski area in nearby North Creek, N.Y. The developer plans to use the land and another 430 acres it owns to construct historic North Creek Ski Bowl Village, a year-round sporting club community that will include inns, hotels, 131 townhouses, restaurants, an equestrian center, retail space and a nine-hole golf course.

Construction of the Ski Bowl Village, which is expected to start in the spring, will take seven to 10 years and cost $250 million. It has been in the planning for several years and has not been hampered by the lagging economy, Crikelair said.

What Rambo said plus Gore need more beginner and novice terrain IF this large scale development is to occur . It also with a new lift system based there would provide direct access from the North Creek base near the town directly to GORE and Burnt Ridge .

I not sure i 'd hold my breath till this ultimately occurs tho !

are you kidding.....70% is novice and beginner already....and half their blacks really are intermediate

and I'm surprised a developer would be putting money in that area based on how NYS runs Gore......they are completely ignorant of skiers needs....seems like not one person in management knows anything about the ski industry

kind of related to the cannon/mittersel thread, I guess they are expanding. what;s not to like? more ski terrain, more jobs, new construction.....is this not progress?

maybe somebody in the NYS govenrment is looking at the NY ski areas close to the metro NY area like Belleayre and Gore thinking there might be a opportunity to keep tourism dollars a little closer to home.

I have never skied at Cannon and I have visited Gore infrequently the past several years. I found gore and whiteface to be a little lacking in amenities that exist in the Vermont resorts. the few times I have been to to Gore, I found the parking situation to be a little disorganized and the slopes were pretty crowded.

I recently visited Belleayre and thought to myself, what a hidden gem! Hope they don;t go out of business. what can be done to keep them running? expanded terrain and upgraded lifts?

See Okemo for why the business plan works ;) WWWWAAAAYYYY more casual skiers/riders out there who prefer friendly groomers over intense terrain - give the masses what they want and you'll retain/increase your market share

OK....the black run statement is an opinion. You really believe a resort with 70% intermediate/beginner needs more of it?

what I think they want is to make Gore a 4 season destination resort which can compete with what Vermont has to offer. it;s about 3 1/2-4 hours from NYC, 1 hour from Albany so there is a market. These NYS run ski areas have languished abit over the years.

Right now it is merely a ski area and pre expansion, not a particulaly large one. Plus, without onsite resort condos and hotel operations, it;s just a day trippers destination and relegated to the low end of the spectrum. is there tremendous money making potential there? someone seems to think so and the economy of upstate NY might depend on it.

Yes for the "Mass Market" that will probably have young children and or others that are not as skilled as you MUST be, i believe that that is necessary .

The hardcore gnarly terrain expert who does not feel that Gore provides enough challenge will take their business elsewhere anyways . But in mass market terms IMO that is a thin slice of the overall market ,

So while you personally feel that your skills are not sufficiently challenged by Gore , you may be in the minority

How many resorts in the NE have more than 70% of their trails beginner/intermediate?

Making that percentage higher is going to draw more skiers?

Why would increasing this need to take place before the development with some modern amentites?

The biggest problem is it's poorly run and nothing is there

1,Several

2, Broadens the Base of potential NEW skiers

3 Which comes first chicken or egg? Development might be phased in simultaneously,
I don't know since i haven't read/studied the developers plan , BUT OBVIOUSLY it has been studied and investors must have determined the potential exists and thus the plan was advanced . So that's seems self evident or moot at this point- n'est pas ?

4. I agree Currently the operation could use a substantive infusion of capable management and capital
