Resort or Ski Area: Gunstock
Conditions: Packed powder to skied off scratchy
Trip Report:
First time to Gunstock. Pulled into the lot at 10am and we were already directed to the one near the Pistol lift. (Far left, took the bus back to the lodge) Crowded. My impression was lots of day trippers (like us) and locals. A lot of kids in classes and folks wiping out on ice.
It snowed a lot of the day, but it wasn't coming down fast enough to keep the series of blues off of the Panorama lift from scratching up.
I was actually surprised at the number of trails and steeps here (at least after skiing the smaller, but way less crowded and better conditioned Ragged the day before). I'll definitely be back mid week. Very foggy at the top - which was too bad.
Various mountains' race teams had one of the trails closed for a competition. Seemed to be decent conditions for that.
10 and 11 year old loved the black Birch Glade. A very simple and short black that was bumped up with a couple of jumps. Looked like there were about 10 to 20 inches from opening up a number of glades. All the kids, and the moms, loved the blues - even with the ice.
I had the 4 year old on the magic carpet - big mistake. Not really steep enough to teach anyone anything. After lunch took him up with the other dad on the "real" bunny hill with a chair lift and he thrived. Great mountain bunny hill area - and chair lift - for the wee ones. He really progressed after just a few runs. Makes me want to ditch all the lessons, until you get them off the leash and comfortable on their own with the pizza and french fries.
A fun place. I'll go back day tripping (or combining with an overnight with Ragged, Loon, or Waterville Valley) midweek when more terrain is open.
