Congrats! I am not at all surprised and I saw that picture the other day, I don't know if you posted it here, or on your site and I surfed over there.. but I like it then and now.

It's a great image, great angles, and very dramatic. Between the skiers technique and your photo technique, how could it not win?! LOL!

Nice job.

The skier

...another interesting note is that in the high resolution... his eyes are closed.

That is interesting. I wonder if that is due to visualization, (see the act in our minds eye) or just due to a extreme concentration. In either case I'd say it was a "bad" thing and needs to be corrected.

Baseball experts claim Ted Williams use to actually see the baseball compress against the bat. That his most important asset was his vision and his ability to follow the ball right to the bat. I would guess the same is true for many sports, that eyesight is a key factor. My father is an amazing ping-pong player.. you can't get a ball by him, even when I can't see the ball going at him, he is returning it. (or used to be a few years ago).. I believe vision is a major factor in athletics.

It would be interesting to see what the skier thought of having his eyes closed. I'll bet he didn't like it, but probably doesn't even realize he is doing it. (either that, or your fill-flash blinded him! LOL!!)

I know that when I'm under a moment of extreme exertion, I do tend to squelch my eyes down or even close them briefly.

It's also possible you just have the remarkable timing to have caught a blink.

Either way, it's a fantastic photograph! I'm guessing you used a zoom lens? How far back from the subject were you actually located?

More like he was about to hit the gate really hard. I think it's an evolved reflex when we are about to hit something to blink or close our eyes. Just funny that I caught it. I'll put the next shot I got off which shows him blowing past the gate.

No flash using zoom telephoto, was at 195mm on my 70-300 IS lens. But with the digital x factor its actually 363mm. I wasn't too far away, about one gate down. It was heavy overcast and dark out, not great light. His body is a little dark, but best I could do in that situation. Maybe if I had a 2.8 lens.
