the most i can do there is a two hour session before i get bored. its ok nothing to steep. no high speed lifts. at the creek you have three different area to ski.

right on..I know the Creek is big with the Jibhonk scene..

I'll be curious what the membership costs are. Kind of like the Yellowstone Club in NJ..

It's about $13,000:-o The say they'll definately be semi-private in 09-2010, meaning private on weekends and holidays and open to the public on weekday, non holidays. If they reach 250 members before 08-09 then they will go semi-private this coming season. They are still selling passes to the public but say they will refund the passes if they reach 250 members. They were semi-private when they opened in the 1970's but I'm not sure how many years that lasted. If they sell the 250 memberships this year it looks like I'll only be skiing there on weekdays because I can't afford the membership but even if I could the mountain isn't worth what they are asking IMO.

$13,000? Yikes, with $13,000, you could afford ten week long ski trips in Colorado.

I think it's the initiation fee, I don't remember the annual fee. I'm on vacation this week at the Jersey shore so I don't have the e-mail from them with the breakdown. You have to request the info with a form on their website and they send you an e-mail a few days later. But yeah it's like a country club, I think they have a pool and tennis courts and stuff for the off season.

More details about membership used to be posted in the site. Not sure they'll pull the private part off, but I'll give them credit for trying to revitalize the place. I can't think of a single mountain I would want to commit to and HV is tiny for that kind of financial commitment IMO. This season they have an great offer for midweek passes to NJSC members. I think its $99 for weekday (day & night) non-holiday, plus a day ticket for any day...only available thru clubs so its not on the site. I think this should work well for them. Between fuel costs and frustration with Mountain Creek, there could be more than 10-15 people there during the day! I'll miss having the whole place to myself, but if it keeps it open...

Great Gorge and Vernon Valley were two seperate areas but were right next to each other so the merged sometime in the 1970's and became Vernon Valley/Great Gorge. It became Mountain Creek when Intrawest bought them at the end of the 1990's. Hidden Valley is very close to MC but is not close enough to be connected.

This link has some interesting history of the area that became MC if anyone's interested:

If you are interested in more history on New Jersey's ski areas then check out my book "Skiing In New Jersey?"

I have detailed histories on Great Gorge, Vernon Valley and Hidden Valley as well as many other ski hills that existed in New Jersey from the 1920s to the present.

It is available through the publisher I used www.lulu.com and many different book websites.

Heino's Ski Shop on Route 23 in Peqauannock, NJ also carries copies.

If you can't find it anywhere - send me a PM and I'll get you a copy.

another reason MC works for me is all the kids we have with us iare between the age's of 9 and 15. these kids won't listen to their parents on how to behave on the mountain but they listen to me like its gospel. these kids are great. they now know how to stay on the side of the trail and ride in the soft stuff. because they actually know how to carve and check their turns for speed. by the end of the year they will be ready for some of the mellow stuff offf the quad at stowe. little rippers are cool.
