Bike ride. In the warmer months, I do mostly road with some mountain mixed in.. in winter I'm pretty much exclusively on the mountain rig. Biking is the best exercise I've done. I'm 42 now and I was in better shape (still am) at 40 than I was at 30.

I have a 27 mile hilly ride that is "my regular" ride in summer. If I can do that 3 days a week and take one longer ride on the weekends (50+, depending on time), you will be in great shape! Like wa-loaf said...with younger kids and not being a trust fund baby....finding a block of time to get out for a good road ride is more challenging than the ride! I am lucky to have some relatively hilly and quiet roads right from my garage as well as some woods about 1/2 mile up a road where we have some sweet single track working!

Staying in shape makes skiing hard every day so so much easier. My issue is that I need to stretch more...when I'm good I do a daily stretch floor routine and feel so much better...but staying with that routine is difficult. I like to do it at night after the girls goto sleep...but I also like to lie on the sofa then too!@

I worked out hard during the spring (after ski season ended) summer and fall. Cardio, heavy weights, swimming and mountain biking. I'm finding it hard to get in a lot of gym time during ski season (skiing takes priority).

I really do feel that it all payed off, as I'm skiing beter this season then I have my whole life.

played as an undergrad @ King's College in PA , then did my advanced degrees from St Lawrence and UB in grad school

UB? buff? I know Kings College from basketball. D2? Ever hear of IUP? Wilkes & Scranton use to be national powers in D3 hoops....these days i lift weights/machines, stretch a lot, stationary bike & the UB. UB is a bicycle for the arms. it's brutal but I get a great sweat (very hard to do in most gyms) & my arms are stronger.

Joined the local gym November 1st. I'm trying to go every morning before work and every day that I don't ski, but sometimes miss a day or two depending on my work schedule. I alternate between cardio and strength training. Cardio I mix it up between the elyptical, stair master and rowing machine to avoid boredom. Strength training I use about 15 different cybex machines and a couple of free weight exercises for arms. I'm down about 10 pounds with a goal of 10 more. I'm certainly much stronger, but haven't really had conditions (read bumps) at Ragged to test myself on.

Biggest nemesis is my old friend nico tine. He's a bastard. Thought I said goodbye to him for good last summer, but was sucked back in the weekend of my wedding. Need to set a date and kick him out again.

Yep Buffalo ,

KC was D3 when i was there we sucked at football at the time :D Ironically my best sport was hoops i actually coached it at college level in addition to teaching when i first embarked on my career in higher education . They asked me to do football because i had good hand/eye coordination and footwork from yrs of hoops and could get open downfield :D:D

Hoops then at KC were great , my roomates were hoopsters but at 6'1" and not being a leaper there was little need for another shooting guard :D:D Ya know the deal white men can't jump !!!so i did football for a yr then focused on getting some grades ,. Scranton was our big rival at the time , we didn't play Wilkes then , they do now .

IUP ---sure have some friends in the PA state college system to this day

Hey sounds like you doing some serious stuff in the gym too -- good on ya ---Use or Lose it :D:D

Way too little. I get away with it now to ski at my current level (I'm 28 ), but at some point I won't get away with it, and if I want to get better, especially in moguls, I probably have to get stronger and in better shape.

I don't "work out" for skiing. I bike.

I bike, therefore I am. That's my big hobby. Skiing is only to pass the time when it's too cold and too wet to ride.

On years that I do my normal amount of riding, I can ski non-stop all day, day in and day out without feeling a thing. And I'm not even an efficient skier. But on years that I don't bike as much or not as consistantly as I like, it shows on my skiing. I get tired after a few hours and have to stop for lunch before I can continue....;)

Use to run and lift a lot. Running was starting to kill my knees, so I switched to swimming and lifting. Now its all swimming. About two miles a week, year round, for the past 17 years. My ski conditioning has never been better, especially aerobically.
