I saw this on another forum

Note to self: teach morse code to friends, communicate SAT answers with friends using 18khz tone.

Now if kids did that, they would truly be resourceful and they would at least learn CW morse code. Of sourse bands have been known to hide CW messages in a high pitched frequency in their albums before.

BTW - Solution to the above problem is obtain device that translates high frequency sounds into lower frequency sound that us old farts can hear and can detect loction of sound source.

I have 2 boys, and we have the reputation as the "strict" parents. I like to think my boys are well behaved and have been told that they are often enough. However....

...I harbor no illusions that they are angels. I am bracing for the later teen years, since the apple does not fall far from the tree. What I remember of my youth, and the tales I have heard of my father's youth portend mayhem and mischief. ;)

It's the quiet ones that you have to watch out for.

Oh I hear ya YSD! My 12 year acts like he's going on 15 and I see the madness ahead. But, like you, my kids have been told by others that they are well behaved and I think they have a good foundation. I'll never admit they're well behaved though!

And yes, still water runs deep.

I could barely pick it up..
I used to be able to tell if a television was on when the volume was off (and I couldn't see it) by the high-pitched tone it produces. This sounded like that..

haven't heard a TV's tone in a long time. interesting.

I think that has more to do with the way TVs are made now than your hearing, in case you needed a little support, there.

one thing I've always found funny is that I can hear the strangest things that no one else can hear, like ultra high tones (highter then the ring) and low tones also, but I cant really hear anything over backround noise. Just realized that is probably the reason I can hear the tone of the ring but not the ring itself.

I can hear it! I'm in my mid 40's

I'm also a teacher and I want to say, teachers beware! There are some cell phones out there that can hardly be noticed. Folks with long hair can put them right over their ear, pull the hair down over the ears and get away with things if you are not vigilant. A high school student was trying to cheat that way today. She has a learning disability and has tests in subjects other than English read to her. An aide was reading the final to her and caught her when they heard a dog bark...they could not hear the person giving her the answers. It turned out to be the students mother.

We have had problems with this child with the cell phone. She has recorded other students conversations to use against them. She and her buddy have placed calls to her mother (the buddy swears and the kid blames a teacher) to get teachers in trouble, This child often 3 cell phones on her. Every time a new one comes out she has it too.

Another problem with cell phones are text messages being sent to confirm drug deals and other meetings.

I think cell phones should be banned in schools. There are ways for the kids to get in touch with parents after school. Most parents of kids with ligitimate reasons to stay already know what time to pick them up.

I love these kids who put so much time in to cheating. It would be a lot easier and probably take less time just to study. Personally I just like to sit next to someone smart and copy of them, a lot easier and works like a charm.

Yeah Austin, that's the way! (Sarcastic if you couldn't tell!)

I have a way to combat this too! I give different versions of the test. Imagine copying the answers only to find out that your questions are in a totally different order, or that your answer choices are in a different order.

Owch ..... two answer keys per class? I like to print the test up on two different colors then swap colors per row to create the idea that it's different tests. ;)

I've just switched page order, since I prepare them on the computer I can easily change the numbers...I can use the same key by making a copy and putting it in the order of the other tests.

In some cases, I actually have 3 or 4 different tests...I teach special ed and often have that many different levels in one class.

This thread has officially been hijacked. ;) Do you teach a specific subject? What type of special ed community do you work with? My wife is a speech pathologist for Autistic Children. She's burnt out though and is hoping the district will move her into a typical speech program.

Subject specific to a point. I teach Math and English. My population is LD (mild to moderate) and I use the grade level materials with modifications. They have to take the grade level test so it makes the most sense to use this material.

I like rich's idea of 2 different colored tests. While not as practical as actually modifying the test, its much more gratifying to know that the little cheaters actually could have cheated, but didn't cause you tricked them.

Kids will catch on quickly. Trust me, after a few tests it will be widely known that the different colored tests are the same.

I had a few teachers that did this. An even better way to combat cheating would be to give tests that involve writing. It is much harder to copy someone else when it's not multiple choice.
