How many people do you know that have an illegal copy of Microsoft Office?

I know a couple people that have an illegal copy. . These are nice people and I don’t think they should be busted or go to jail. Rumor has it Microsoft like the music industry may be getting ready to go after the illegals.

Anybody use free download of OpenOffice.org? I have used the new OpenOffice 2.0 version and its extremely compatable with Microsoft Office documents.

If you have a friend that has an illegal copy of Microsoft Office you may want to let them know about the FREE OpenOffice.org .

Why OpenOffice.org ?

Microsoft can't get water from a stone. Most people with pirated copies obviously can't afford the legal version nor do they have any resources to pay out to microsoft. And so long as they never distributed it, microsoft can only collect the price of the product.

It would be a waste of money on microsofts part.

Music is different. Possesing pirated music is not a crime (i dont think so) it is the act of sharing it (which goes hand in hand with aquireing it) that is illegal. This rule applies to software too, but most people generally don't get the software online.

i didn't know open office was up to v2.0. i will have to take a look. i tried the original 1.x version and while it was very capable of doing anything office could, office was still far superior and more user friendly (i really hate to admit that). it is not a matter of what i used first either, as i love firefox despite having used IE for 8 years or so (pretty much since it came out with win95) before switching to FF.

if microsoft goes after any one, much like the music industry, it will probably be the biggest offenders and distributors. though possessing anything pirated would be illegal if you know it is pirated, that would be accepting stolen goods. if you know it is stolen, that would definitely be illegal. the music industry is still behind the times and needs a good ole' smack in the head. can't wait until the industry falls apart and i can download music directly from the artists and give them 100% of the profit for the album.

Huge improvement in OpenOffice.org V2.0 over V1. Give V2 a try. For my email, I also use Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5.02 which now has inline spell checking, extremely fast, and the best part never hangs up like Microsoft Outlook.

I agree with you on the music industry. The artists should get a much bigger cut of the action.

Yes, I use OpenOffice (and Linux). I'm happy enough with OO, but it annoys me in some of the same ways Word did. I never was a big fan of Word, I always used WordPerfect. I switched to OO though when I switched OSs. For people who are used to Word, though, OO should be a pretty easy switch, and it's always nice to get away from MS.

When I bought this laptop it came with a 60 day version of Office 2003 Standard Edition. My desktop purchased last year had my purchased version of Office for Windows 95. It worked even on XP on the desktop.

I needed a more modern version of Office and with Office Max going out of business I purchased a copy of the Office 2003 Standard Edition for $107 on markdown. I installed it on the desktop and used the product key to fully activate the one on this laptop. According to Microsoft's User Agreement you can install it on a second computer as long as they are both owned by you.

$107 isn't too bad but its $107 you did not have to spend.

The worse part is your going to email some of those Office 2003 documents you created with the enhanced features to your friends. Since your friends have older version of Microsoft Office like Office2000 or OfficeXP, they will not be able to view or edit the Office 2003 documents you sent them. Now your friends have to go out and spend $100 of dollars for Office 2003. If you were thinking at the time you saved the document, you could specify to save it in the older Office format. Unfortunatly, most people don't think about doing that.
