Where can I find an independent snow board instructor for my 14 year old son ? I’m going to transition him from skiing to a snowboarding this year so I can keep up with him ( once again ) for few more years. Possibly I’ll be looking to hire somebody who has a pass to Loon for several Sundays but the location is not cut in stone yet.

He will have his own pass and equipment so the packages through the mountain don't make sense to me.

Do you think this is a viable proposition ? Are there people out there that are capable and would be willing to pick up work by the day or half day ?

i would have to agree and say pats peak or another small Nh mtn. would be the best bet. i find the smaller mtns have the better deals and prices and for the most part have a great area to learn and pratice in, ( not to say that loon doesnt have a good learning area) take a look at some area maps and prices, and as far as ind. instr. not sure what you mean, an instr. that works on the side ? or an inst. that is not working for a mtn?

A instructor that I know at Hunter works on the side doing private lessons. The lessons he gives are cheaper than the mountain, and he makes more off it than he does working for the mountain.

I would say look for a instructor at the mountain, and check if you could work something out.

What your proposing, being that the instructor is not affiliated with the resort your getting the lesson at, is illegal is some cases and definately not considered kosher by the resort not to mention the vulnibility this instructor opens himself/herself to liabilitywise if the student gets injured during the lesson.

If it's on forest service land, it's against the law to accept compensation for private instruction rendered without a permit and a cut going to Uncle Sam. If it's on private property, the resort is perfectly within it's rights to toss you and the instructor off the mountain.

Course it does happen but better yet get a private lesson by a certitified instructor in the ski/snowboard school at the resort. Just saying...
