Those that have skied with me know I don't know much about skiing. But, I know something about farming. The farms of the midwest aren't moving anywhere. There is no end in sight of a steady increase in midwest crop yields. Graphic below is indicative of yield trends for corn, as an example.

If you look at the reserve depletion rate of the Ogallala aquifer, you might want to reconsider.

The island of misfit toys.
Oh yes absolutely, advancing technology is what is behind the trend in crop production (I learned my lesson - there is only one way to use the word 'corn' on a skiing forum :) ). And YardSaleDad is correct in pointing out there are issues with acquifer depletion. But, I was responding to the comment about midwest farming moving to Canada. It's not going to to hapen in my ifetime or my children's.

But, I digress. I have spent my entire working life in the agricultural industry and I let my enthusiam overshadow the realization this is a skiing forum. My apologies.

Man, don't we all need snow bad?

My bad, I've seen too many thinly related global warming "graphs." Knee jerk and such.

Check out the facts:

- Locally...first time since 1891 that Central Park NY has not had recorded snowfall this late in December (also not a sniff in my colder neck of the woods far NW of the City)

Obviously global warming is real, but this is completely irrelevant. NYC also happens to have a streak of four consecutive winters with 40" or more snowfall in Central Park. That's never happened before.

Evereyone who saw snow in Central Park prior to 1826 is now dead. Clearly, snow in NYC is dangerous, and should be banned.

Ok, does anybody besides me realize that the corn yield may also be steadily increasing due to other factors besides the weather, such as planting, fertilizing and harvesting techniques and other new technology?

I'm not a naysayer, but I also hate bad science. And evidence needs to be based around as few independent variables as possible. Stop dumbing this stuff down, it accomplishes nothing.
thank you! correlation does NOT equal causation folks. productivity can go up even when environmental factors that could influence crop yield are changing. and we can have one bad season that correlates well with long term temperature trend increases but they are not linked just because they are correlated. also, in regards to climate change, it should be noted that some sections of the globe could get colder and snowier even during a warming period. obviously the glacier stuff is going the other way, but some places could see record snowfalls in a long term pattern. speaking of big snow falls, any one citing this season as a direct link to global warming should check out the latest reports from UT and CO having stellar decembers.
