Jacket/Layering Q

I've been looking for a new shell, my current Marmot jacket is still great, just getting an itch for a new style...

then I thought...I do have a Marmot Aegis shell, waterproof, liteweight (maybe too light weight) but i was thinking if i layerd something like a Patagonia M's Down Sweater for Nano Puff down pullover that might work..

anyone have any field experience with any of these Patagoina (or similar) down jackets...if its not sloppy snow or raining i could just wear it as my outer jacket...i'm hearing these are really warm/windproof....what temp ranges would this work in?

I got a Nano Puff a couple weeks ago and haven't had a chance to use it yet, but am planning on wearing it this weekend with highs only in the teens. I know Wa-loaf has a couple and talks highly of them.

I own a Patagonia Micropuff Vest. I wore it on one of the first days of lift served and it sucked because it is not nearly as breathable/wickable as my fleece. The moisture just condenses on the inside of the vest and you get clammy. I wear my vest alone on the coldest days and for around town. I layer with fleece pretty much exclusively.

Don't get me wrong it is a nice piece of gear and I got it on super closeout for 65% off the price. You just have to use it for the right application, which happens to be wearing it on the coldest of days alone between the car and house, on the town, etc. It is not great for active wear.

For my money fleece is the way to go. I own a lot of different styles and brands. Patagonia is expensive, but the higher end fleeces, like the R4 are worth it. Also look at Marmot fleece, which I have been able to snag at TJ Maxx for pennies on the dollar. Good stuff.

On the coldest of days I put the R4 under my hard or softshell. If you are cold wearing the R4 you have a problem...it is the warmest fleece coat known to man. For the first several years, and if it is not snowing or raining, I can wear it alone because it is windproof. My R4 is now pushing nine years old, so the windproofing is wearing, but man oh man that is a nice jacket. There will be a lot of places looking to unload them very soon. I got one for my wife for less than HALF the price. No weird color or size eitheR.

I would go with the Down Sweater over the Nano Puff. The DS is a much nicer fit under a coat. Can be worn as jacket but it's not very rugged. The Nano will be warmer when wet giving you a bit more versatility to wear as a jacket. I have the DS and swear by it although I only wear it as a mid-layer.

Try them both on as they have a completely different fit. Bring your Outer layer with you as well.
