Goal was to get to Tram Side by 8am so I could pick up my pass and make first chair. I got there 30 minutes later than planned and just as well. The Jet went down for 2 hours or so and some folks got evac'd so just as well I was running late and staying warm inside. Took one warm up run down Jet and if that's the last I see of a groomer for the rest of the season, it is okay with me. Skied the next couple hours in boot deep untracked every run with some knee deep drifts and special side of the trail shots. Sweet. Too bad Jay is closed Wednesday... I might have to buy a lift ticket somewhere else though I have not ruled out skinning...... 2/2 on powder days so far this season and soon to be 3/3.

NVT love. Broken lifts are my dream come true.
Normally mine too. I left my touring gear at home. Also... figured if they got the lifts going, then earning a run would leave me with less energy for later. Good decisions all around, but the lift being down first thing had me wondering if I had brought the right gear.

Damn i looked for you on Saturday!

Great snow too on saturday... as i got to the mountain to a broken lift, i went out poking in the woods to scout some lines... found something great... but far... But it's this time of year where you see everything... but can't ride it yet!

I got pulled into work on Saturday to cover for an emergency. Just as well. We found stuff that had not been touched on Saturday so it accumulated all day and night Saturday. You might be able to look for me on Friday but I am not sure yet. I'll be somewhere Friday.

Frick... I wish I had my skis mounted. Or I still had my old boots, or my dads boots fit, or I didn't give away my old skis which were mounted for medium freerides, or i could have cut through a piece on my small naxos so I could fit 305mm boots in them.

Yeah, there was quite the combination of events that led to me not being able to ski today.

Sucks to hear about a busted lift, especially for the people stuck on it. It's too early in the season for that to be happening!

Sounds like you made the best of it though!

I can top that...

I was up there Sunday as well. After the first time the lift shut down, myself and my friend decided to start boot packing it. Idea being if the lift starts up we head back to the chair, if not we would continue to the top. Well, hour plus later still no chair movement so we headed to the top. Did a quick run under the face chutes and looped around to the tram house. Started down vermonter and got into 2-3' of untracked pow pow. That made the trip for the day right there. Hiked back up to the triple and took the groomer down. Took one lap on the chair and entered Timbuk glades. Good depth but no base to speak of. Returned to the chair to find it was down again. Back to the lodge for food, wate and skins. Took one more ride on the chair, now working, and headed over to JFK. Okay coverage but a lot of snow was blown into the woods. Pushed/skinned/crawled out the main base area back to State Side to end the day. So, total tally for the day:

1 Full mountain hike
2 Lift rides
3' of powder
1 sore puppy glad to have a desk job.

Not to bad for the first day of the season.

On the other hand, I always find it a tad bit sad when I look back on my best days after a season has ended... and I find that I never have pics on my best of days. Oh well. I will try to redeem myself later this week but no promises!!! ;)

I am the worst at that. All I have is memories. Even when I bring a camera I forget to break it out. Then again I think talking should be done on the lifts. Stiiting around fumbling for picks so your can have you 5 minutes of fame on the internet never appealed to me

Funny, thats where my best pics of the season come from.

And I dont take them for "fame on the internet" I take them for my photo albums in my house.
Oh, don't get me wrong. I take a good amount of powder pictures. I also have photos framed in my house from some of my better days. But sometimes the time it takes to get out the camera, setup a shot, etc. takes you out of the moment. And when the untracked is going quick, a few minutes here and a few minutes there could be the difference between getting untracked versus sloppy seconds. I take most of my powder day pictures mid-week when competition is low and I can go at a more relaxed pace.
