It's a long drive on a Friday night - especially when you hit pockets of traffic all the way up past Hartford. But when you get close to Jay and start seeing more and more and still more snow. The snow banks grow with every bit of elevation gained on 242. You lurch into an unplowed parking spot right in front of the Hotel Jay next to a car that is covered with snow and you know - tomorrow's gonna be a good day!

I rode the Bon Adventure and the Jet all day. Freezer opened around 10 but I never took it. No Tram. Still pretty windy up there. Not cold though. Felt like it was around 30F.

We skied boundary to boundary and beyond, as well as in the middle, and everything had really good snow. Not a lot of fresh tracks but overall a very nice consistency. Not heavy and grabby, not super light, just right for the amount that they had. In a few places lower down the crud was getting heavy and a bit wet. In fact, for the last hour or so there was a very heavy fog up high and a kind of mist that froze on goggles and clothes. I think it was warmer up high and starting as rain then freezing on contact.

I was alone and wanted to ski trees so I signed up for their glades clinic, Couldn't have worked out better. It was me, a guy from Boston and multiple instructors. We headed straight over to the Jet and did 2 runs outside of TImbuckto as a fast moving pack. The lines looked to be at least 10 minutes so being in ski school was awesome for that reason alone. After 2 runs there Boston, myself and our instructor skied Kits Woods, and, finally, Deliverence, (first time I ever skied it from the top - that narrow chute under the Bonnie)

I took a break and then Boston and I skied together for the rest of the day. We went back OB to Corona, skied Kitz Woods again, Deliverance again, then Upper River Quai to Vertigo. Quai was a trip. it was so foggy you could not see what you were skiing. Fortunately there was a ton of snow up there. Visibility was fine in the trees, crap everywhere else. We finished with a short walk up Nor Am to access Andre's Paradise where we had a great last run with some of the best snow of the entire day.

I'd been debating all week, where to go, not wanting to make the long drive. Magic didn't seem to have enough cover to open things like Goniff. Jay had been getting an inch or so almost every day and so I finally made a reservation Friday AM for that night. There is a lot of snow up there - don't miss it!

Jay lodging has been offering some incredible deals and the hotel and treated me very well.

Nice report crank.

Gotta get there. Never been.

Not my report, but some of my friends were up there and they posted a few pics on our blog:

They said pretty much the same thing about the conditions and the freezing fog.

From the pics it looked sweet. And the base up there ... deeper than a ski pole.

They know Jay pretty well so I think they did get some untracked lines.

To bad you couldn't stay another night. They got 4-6 inches over night. Took first run down Can Am and the wind was blowing just right so that the trail was covered edge to edge with powder. Best run I have ever had down Can Am.

Sounds great! I have a two-for-one that I'm going to use there in March. How much did the Glade clinic cost?

In my mind, northern New England
Just got back from Jay today. Wow! Saturday afternoon on the Flyer was pretty miserable especially late in the afternoon because of the freezing rain. They actually stopped running it after three. Did glades on that side of the mountain. Beaver Pond was money. Sunday morning: great to wake up with 6 inches of fresh. Early tracks down Can Am, Deliverance, Timbuktu, Canyonlands, North Glades, the glades beside UN and just about any glade. Broke a pole in Staircase but I guess that's the price I paid for having my best day at Jay (of course, I get there once a year so I'm probably not an authority on this). Great deals on lodging. Hotel Jay is coming down in May and I think they're trying to get the most of it.

Clinic cost $40 and ran 10 - 12. I tipped the instructor $10 on top of that. They seemed to be good about skiing at a level you are comfortable with. The lead instructor asked us if we wanted to go hard and fast and ski anything or slower and lower angle. Both of the paying customers: Boston and me, said were down for anything, so they put us in the same group and we ripped trees for the rest of the day together. Boston is a very good skier and I managed to keep up.
