It's a long drive on a Friday night - especially when you hit pockets of traffic all the way up past Hartford. But when you get close to Jay and start seeing more and more and still more snow. The snow banks grow with every bit of elevation gained on 242. You lurch into an unplowed parking spot right in front of the Hotel Jay next to a car that is covered with snow and you know - tomorrow's gonna be a good day!
I rode the Bon Adventure and the Jet all day. Freezer opened around 10 but I never took it. No Tram. Still pretty windy up there. Not cold though. Felt like it was around 30F.
We skied boundary to boundary and beyond, as well as in the middle, and everything had really good snow. Not a lot of fresh tracks but overall a very nice consistency. Not heavy and grabby, not super light, just right for the amount that they had. In a few places lower down the crud was getting heavy and a bit wet. In fact, for the last hour or so there was a very heavy fog up high and a kind of mist that froze on goggles and clothes. I think it was warmer up high and starting as rain then freezing on contact.
I was alone and wanted to ski trees so I signed up for their glades clinic, Couldn't have worked out better. It was me, a guy from Boston and multiple instructors. We headed straight over to the Jet and did 2 runs outside of TImbuckto as a fast moving pack. The lines looked to be at least 10 minutes so being in ski school was awesome for that reason alone. After 2 runs there Boston, myself and our instructor skied Kits Woods, and, finally, Deliverence, (first time I ever skied it from the top - that narrow chute under the Bonnie)
I took a break and then Boston and I skied together for the rest of the day. We went back OB to Corona, skied Kitz Woods again, Deliverance again, then Upper River Quai to Vertigo. Quai was a trip. it was so foggy you could not see what you were skiing. Fortunately there was a ton of snow up there. Visibility was fine in the trees, crap everywhere else. We finished with a short walk up Nor Am to access Andre's Paradise where we had a great last run with some of the best snow of the entire day.
I'd been debating all week, where to go, not wanting to make the long drive. Magic didn't seem to have enough cover to open things like Goniff. Jay had been getting an inch or so almost every day and so I finally made a reservation Friday AM for that night. There is a lot of snow up there - don't miss it!
Jay lodging has been offering some incredible deals and the hotel and treated me very well.
