Trip Report: Everyone knows the saying: if you don't succeed, try again (and again, and again...)
I've been to Jay Peaks in the couple seasons past, often late in the season after all other mountains down south had closed. So condition were never particularly great. And the few times I made it up there in mid-winter, I hadn't gotten the luck on snow. Only the high wind was encountered each and every time...and memory of wind scorched hardpack surfaces!
But finally my luck turned! Or my perseverance finally bore fruit.
The Cats had a bunch of snow early part of the week and I was seriously questioning my decision to go up north only on the prospect of "dusting to a few inches" forecast. In the morning, as I pulled off from the interstate into the back roads leading up to Jay, snow flakes started flying. And soon enough, the flakes got BIG and were flying thickly, and it kept on and on for the 1/2 hr I was on the road. I could already see my error on not getting up at crack of dawn to make first chair...
As quickly as I can I found a spot of parking (having a tiny compact car has its benefits ). Geared up and jump on the nearest quad for a warm-up. I could see the groomer beneath the lift wore a thick coat of fluffy snow. So I lapped it. It was fantastic!!!
I won't bore you all with the detail runs I took. I did groomers and I did glades. Suffice to say it's all great in all places. It kept dumping the entire day. So whatever got tracked out got filled in a bit later and became fresh again! Truly, truly I felt like a kid in a candy store, couldn't decide on which one of the delicious runs I should try next!!!
Even on my very last run of the day, I thought I'd take an easy cool down run down the Northway, I found the wind had thrown a good 2-3" of freshies on it for the little while when skier traffic were thinning out towards last chair. What a lovely ending of my day!
In the back of my mind, I wondered how many of those "few inches" Jay's getting that day. It turned out they got a FOOT!
The infamous "jay cloud" had lived up to its hype!!!
(A slightly sad note. Having such a great day, I was naturally tempted to extend my stay at Jay. But the Tramhaus was full and with very limited options nearby, I had to leave all that fresh powder behind...)
