Area skied: Jay Peak Resort

Date skied: March 18, 2006 from 9:00am - 1:30pm

Surface conditions: Packed powder, powder, icy spots

My son and I arrived at the tram area lodge at 8:30am after a 1 hour drive from our hotel in Waterbury. The parking lot was still fairly empty at that time, but it was filling up fast. The "Jay Cloud" was hard at work as it was constantly snowing lightly for the whole day.

The tram already had a long wait at 9:00 am, so our first run was off the Flyer and down Ullrs Dream. The trail was nicely groomed with packed powder and just a few scratchy spots.

We took the Flyer up again and skied down Northway which had fantastic packed powder, but alot of traffic. We waited in about a 10 minute line for the Bonaventure Quad and skied Notrhway again down to Angels Wiggle and to the Bonaventure Glade, which was Warrens first black diamond glade, and he skied it with ease.

We took the Queens Highway T-Bar back to the tram side and skied off the Metro Quad into Bushwacker Glades which Warren like so much that we skied it three times.

I left Warren to ski alone on the Metro Quad while I skied Sraircase Glade and Everglade. Staircase beat me up pretty bad with its tight lines and I took more than one fall, but still had fun.

Warren and I took one last run down Ullrs Dream, which by 1:00pm had some nasty boilerplate due to the high winds, and into Beaver-Pond glade, which had some nice powder moguls that Warren handled with great confidence.

The weather featured a constant light snow and a temperature of 15F at 9:00am and 14F at 2:00pm.

I never got to take Warren on the tram as the line was really long, and this was the most crowded day that I have ever seen at Jay, but we both had a great time.

Thank you very much for the invitation, since I am skiing with my son, I did not want to hold anyone up. I am amazed at how well we skied the glades together.

Great report Loafer! I bet your son would like Expo,Buckaroo Bonzai,Buck Woods or North Glade too. All are diamonds but have room to move once you get inside.

Thanks for the advice about the glades. Warren was actually zipping past me on Beaver Pond glade because he has the benefit of really short skis.

Warren just ran out of energy after 4 hours of skiing for any more glades, but he really likes the the trees.

Our plan is to Night ski at stowe tonight, sunday is still up in the air at this point.

I had a great day at Stowe as well. Wind wasn't a problem today? I ask because we had some gusts.

it was blowing hard all day long but none of the lifts went down. not as bad over on the jet, but it was still really windy all day. it was strong enough of a wind that i only skied the freezer once before saying "no more!"

I was there Saturday as well, and in answer to a question that was posted on this board not too long ago. The Green Mountain Flyer is the coldest lift on the east coast!

I also loved it when the chair got hit with a nice 20MPH + gust with 10F weather. My face mask was a solid block of ice and I was loving every minute of it, spring sucks anyway.

Instant brain freeze(without the frozen margerita) around 11:30 for us.

loafer89, Sorry about the hijack on this thread, glad you had such a nice day with your son. I agree Beavepond Glade was nice with some pow to be found there. Also found some nice powder in Canyon Land glades, did you try that one?

My son tired out after skiing Bushwacker, Bonaventure and Beaver Pond Glade. We had a great time and he really likes glades. I thought about taking him down Everglade, but it is probably too long for him and I did not want to push him too hard.

Warren and I skied in some deep powder yesterday at Bolton, but only I skied their glades because I am not familiar with Bolton's tree skiing.

As for Bolton's Tree Skiing: good decision not to take him. This was the training grounds for the DesLauriers brothers....so some pretty interesting and intense stuff.

I read about that, and Lost Boyz glade (which I read they like to ski) looked REALLY nice with at least 2' of wind drifted powder inside of it looking down from the quad chair. It was closed all day, probably with good reason to as most of the ungroomed natural snow trails had unedgable ice underneath all of the powder.

I saw alot of people skiing some steep stuff with deep powder, but I did not want to experiment with how best to break my neck. Skiing a foot of untouched powder on the main runs was good enough for me.

I was skiing Upper Brandy Wine just after patrol opened it with a guy and his son when suddenly the guy took a turn on the steeper part and wiped out. I was wondering what was wrong when all of a sudden I turned and all the snow in one spot slide away revealing a nice undercoat of ice.

Ski patrol closed the upper part of the trail not too long after I skied it due to the snow getting skied off the steeper parts of the trail.
