As long as it runs without breaking, and with a few less wind holds, I don't care what it's called. The new name doesn't seem any worse than "Snowlite Express"

Originally, the Catskill mountains' name was spelled "Kaatskil" by the 17th Century Dutch settlers - a spelling still attested in Washington Irving's "Rip van Winkle", taking place in this area and emphasizing the Dutch origin of the earlier European settlers there.

Note that kil means stream in Dutch. Kaats probably referred to the big cats called Panthers at the time or Bobcats. Panthers is another name for mountain lions which lived in the Catskills.

I guess we can call the new lift the Dutch flyer.

those unfamiliar with the local history

why 'Kaat'skill instead of 'Catskill'

WHOEVER has made a voyage up the Hudson must remember the Kaatskill mountains. They are a dismembered branch of the great Appalachian family, and are seen away to the west of the river, swelling up to a noble height, and lording it over the surrounding country. Every change of season, every change of weather, indeed, every hour of the day, produces some change in the magical hues and shapes of these mountains, and they are regarded by all the good wives, far and near, as perfect barometers. When the weather is fair and settled, they are clothed in blue and purple, and print their bold outlines on the clear evening sky, but, sometimes, when the rest of the landscape is cloudless, they will gather a hood of gray vapors about their summits, which, in the last rays of the setting sun, will glow and light up like a crown of glory.

"Even old New York was once New Amsterdam - Why they changed it I can't say - People just liked it better that way"

Kind of figured that there really isn't a way to get "Slutzsky" into the name without it quickly sending out some "less than desireable" nicknames ;)

Talked with Russ this AM... Told me the choppers are working the week of Aug 16th.. As I was pulling out of the lot a big truck was negotiating the turn into Hunter loaded with ladders and other stuff that looked like part of the top terminal...

I also asked him about the name of the lift... And told him most people don't care what it's called as long as it runs... Got a smile - but no comment..
