I grew up outside of Saratoga, so I'm into the horses, but I just have to point out that I don't believe I've ever seen a payoff of this size in any race.......

$2 Exacta 10-18 $9,814.80

$2 Trifecta 10-18-12 $133,134.80

Wow........

I have NO idea what this means.

-Stephen

This means that since the winner (#10 - Giacomo) went off at 50-1, and the 2nd horse (#18 - Closing Argument) went off at 72-1, if you had put down a bet that they would finish first and second, you would have won $9,814.80 for each $2 you bet. This is called betting the exacta, as you are betting on the exact finish of any 2 horses.

In addition, the 3rd-place horse (#12 - Afleet Alex) was a 9-2 bet, so if you had picked these 3 horses to finish in order (a "trifecta" or "triple" bet), every $2 was worth over $133,000, which is just crazy. These are the biggest payoffs I have ever seen in any horse race anwyhere, and the fact that it was the Kentucky Derby is just amazing.

If anyone needs a course on horse race betting, I'm your guy. For a small fee, I will get you "in the money".....

And a small side benefit was the fact that NY Yankee owner George Steinbrenner's horse, Bellamy Road, which was the pre-race favorite, ran 7th.........har har har.....

Largest payout is correct.

Not the longest shot (first place) to come in. $184.90 returned by Donerail in 1913.

Stephen,

I'll teach you how to "wheel" and play the field with the third horse someday. Or maybe "key" the longshot and "load up" with favorites underneath. Or perhaps how to "birdcage" some NFL "tease" bets after going "All In".

My mother always thought her father, my grandfather, was a bad influence on us kids.

Isn't this race offically called some other name now since the State of Kentucky passed a royalty law on anything using the word Kentucky. It's true. That's why we don't hear Kentucky Woman on the radio anymore and why it's named KFC now.
