Snow East Mag does a survey too, it a reader survey and I think it thus basis by resorts that simply have more skiers. But check it out, it tells a different story.

The link has more info

That poll is so 'underpopulated' it isn't even funny. Additionally, the math doesn't make sense in some cases.

Gunstock, Cranmore, and Jiminy Peak all make the list before either of the Sugars?

In 2008

1. Mont Tremblant, QC = #1
2. Smugglers’ Notch, Vt.= #7
3. Stowe, Vt.= #2
4. Holiday Valley, NY= #9
5. Whiteface Mountain, N.Y.= #5
6. Killington, Vt. = #12
7. Loon, N.H.= #14
8. Bretton Woods, N.H.= #11
9. Stratton, Vt. = #16
10. Okemo, Vt.= #8

What did these areas do to influence their rise or fall? Probably in most cases nothing. The sad thing is casual skiers may use this rating to decide where to take the family ski vacation, etc.

Almost think the magazines would be better to do away with 'rankings'.

Just devote the main resort guide to say 20 large and 10 Medium resorts from the East and 40 large and 20 medium resorts from the West. Give me the stats, prices, and brief take on the pros, cons and where the resort is heading in the future, which I think is valuable information for people who choose vacation destinations with real estate investment interests.

You could do follow up issues with feeder hill reviews. Maybe a magazine with a large section devoted to the mid-west etc.

Rankings really don't mean anything and you're probably right. Casual skiers might end up at resorts that aren't a good fit for them based purely on the rankings.

When I takeover this site..I will lock all discussions related to ski resort rankings because the topic is always lame./.
