I'm taking a trip to San Diego for Thanksgiving!!! Leaving next Wednesday! VDK03 has a cousin that lives there and we found an amazing deal on plane tickets. I've never been to California... any recommendations for the area? I'm sure that Jim's cousin will have an inside scoop on things to do and places he likes to go but I'm always interested in seeing what else is out there. I kind of wanted to go to Mexico for a day but I heard it can be a nightmare to come back (4-5 hours of traffic). I am thinking about making a trek to Temecula as I heard there are some good vineyards in the area. Either way, I plan on eating a lot for Thanksgiving and hoping that the 68-70 degree weather will put some sun on these bones, I haven't been on a trip to the ocean in quite some time!

La jolla is beautiful! Spent a good amount of time there in the early 90's. Its changed a lot so I am totally out of touch with what to do but i'm sure you will have a blast the place is fantastic!

Around San Diego, Torey Pines beach is pretty awesome. That was my favorite hang the limited time I spent there.

La Jolla is quite scenic and beautiful, but it wasn't really my scene. If I could compare it to anywhere I've been on the East Coast, it would be Newport, Rhode Island. Great place, but a little too high brow for me.

I'm not sure if you guys will be fully grounded in San Diego, but if you can make it North of L.A.; do it. I vastly more enjoyed my time between Ventura and Morrow Bay (furthest north I made it) than I did my time in San Diego.

Knowing you guys, if there's one recommendation I could make, it would be to pack your riding gear, drive up and spend a day or two in Pismo Beach and rent some bikes. Probably no place like it in the country to ride.

In the early 90's I spent a couple of years doing door to door sales in San Diego county. I sold coupons (you read that right) on behalf of businesses in both La Jolla and Temecula (great name).

Those were formative years for me. Because of the dumb job I explored seemingly every inch of that county. It was an amazing time during which I was a pauper but, damn, it was fun.

Sorry, any recommendations I could give would be outdated.

I could live off of Mexican food full time.

There are a lot of things I liked about Cali, and a lot of things I didn't, but one of the things I liked, like Mr.Edd Said was the mexican food. I've tried to find other places outside of California that can compare but none come close.

One place that is literally to die for is a hole in the wall "restaurant" called Eriberto's, in oceanside (about a mile outside the Camp Pendleton gate on redondo drive). I say to die for because they cook their food in lard so if you don't get an instant heart attack you'll have the best mexican food bar none. The place may not look special from the outside but that place was a favorite of a lot of service members. Downtown oceanside is pretty cool to walk through as a beachside community as well.

My buddy rented a quad when he was out there and went to Pismo. He had a blast. Totally different riding. Out here, it's slower and more technical; 4x4 quads. Dunes, he was wide open and on a sport machine.
