Loon Mountain - 1.6.2012

Ski: 4 advanced skiers spending the day at Loon to dust off the summer cobwebs. Since off piste and glades aren't an option we'll probably be making spirited runs on black and blue trails. If there are bumps that have formed since the New Years thaw, rain and refreeze, we may make a few passes in those as well. If anyone will be up there and wants to share a few runs, please send me a way to contact you on the snow.

Loon definitely has a lot of terrain open. I'm not sure how much so I'll just suggest visiting their website for the acreage or trail totals rather than take a guess. Most of the trails that are open have snow covering the entire slope. Only a few had thin cover before reaching the woods. Where the coverage doesn't fill the entire trail the mountain staff has done a good job at marking it. Slopes are still recovering from the rain, melt and refreeze from New Years weekend meaning groomed snow on top of the white ice base is thin. Because it's thin, it skied off very quickly but to Loon's credit it skied off to white ice and not dirt or rock. They also had guns running all day so expect resurfacing of open terrain and new trails daily.

Upper Walking Boss was the run of the day in my opinion. Snow guns had been running for a long time so there was great coverage and soft whales morphed to soft scattered moguls throughout the day.

If you're more into groomed hero snow then Seven Brothers kept it's coverage all day when other runs were scraping off to the white ice base layer.

In summary; Loon has lots of open terrain and you can feel confident pulling the freshly sharpened cruisers from the quiver as it's unlikely you'll find coverage thin enough to do any damage to the tune.
