Magic Mountain 4-2-11
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Date(s) Skied: Saturday, April 2nd, 2011

Resort or Ski Area: Magic Mountain

Conditions: 6" fresh heavy snow. Warming and getting sticky by early afternoon

Trip Report:

Well, a lot of people said they're hitting Magic but no report now that it's 10pm already? Maybe the heavy snow is killing us? ;)

Anyway, like others reported in the surroundinng area, Magic got 5-6" of wet snow Friday. It skied nicely earlier in the morning. But even by 11, I can feel its grabbiness on the flatter part of the trails. Unfortunately, the layout of Magic is you have a long runout at the bottom no matter which trail you come down on.

Seeing how the snow was getting stickier by the minute, I skipped lunch and skied till about 1:30, figuring the afternoon might be a lose. After lunch, I went back out around 2. Made 2 runs and was 100% convinced it's a waste of legs and called it quits before 3.

A lot of the upper trails are showing bare spots. I don't know if they can hold out till next Saturday, unless they got more snow out of next week's storm.

According to the girl working at the ticket office. They MAY open next Saturday if condition allowes. And ONLY Saturday.

Wow, sorry to hear that. I was one of the ones who was going to go to Magic upon the 17 inch prediction, and even when it was dropped to 8 inches I would have gone, but when I woke up Friday morning and it was dropped to 5 inches I decided to bag it (based on my drive). I really hope we get one more walloping storm, as I really want to go back to Vermont or Whiteface one more time, but I'm starting to lose hope with this warming trend we seem to be getting into. :(

Why do you need more snow to make it worth your while to ski again? I had a lot of fun this weekend. But some of the best days of the year are once the corn cycle begins. A sunny perfect corn day is right up there with boot deep pow.

We were there. Goniff glade had the best snow ...not sure why if was roped off except maybe due to the couple of downed trees?
It was the run of the day IMO.
Will upload pix later

Great Day

The "skiing sheik" was there in honor of "cape day". Fantastic skiing and partying all day! More to come later. Just got back from the second leg of the sheik tour at Okemo today.

^^^ Awesome! ^^^

That must be later in the day...there's people passed out on the picnic tables already, unless they're left over from the night before.

I dont think you read what I wrote carefully enough.
Okay, maybe I misread something. Let me go back and check...

I really hope we get one more walloping storm, as I really want to go back to Vermont or Whiteface one more time
Nope. You suggested that you are ready to head back up to VT/NY if we get one more walloping storm. If you intended that to mean something different, that is not what I read. Remember that communication is what the other person hears/reads, not what you intended for them to hear/read.

The run outs got a little manky but fresh wax definitely helped that. The upper mountain skied incredibly well all day and it was good to rip some runs with reefer and crew. Sunday wound up even better with cool NW winds keepng the base from getting soggy. Some awesome soft snow to be had all over the mountain.
