ASPEN, Colo.—A Massachusetts man has been issued a summons for allegedly leaving the scene of a skiing accident in Aspen.

A Pitkin County sheriff's deputy served the summons to 61-year-old William Marsh at a condominium complex where he was staying on Saturday.
Marsh is accused of colliding with a skier earlier that day on Aspen Mountain.
Sheriff Patrol Director Ann Stephenson says Marsh stopped to give the other skier his contact information, but left the accident scene before the ski patrol arrived. That's a violation of the Colorado Skier Safety Act.
The other man, who was not identified, was treated for a shoulder injury at Aspen Valley Hospital, where a nurse reported the alleged safety act violation.

Seems like he tried at least by giving him the information. I wouldn't know that was Colorado law either.

I read a more indepth article somewhere on the web. IIRC, the nurse at the hospital contacted the cops. The girl who was hit had just mentioned something to the nurse about someone stopping.

I would have had no clue about the law either. While it probably would have made sense for him to stay until more help arrived, this certainly isn't the worse thing he could have done. In fact, stopping and leaving his name ended up biting him in the arse in this case. "No good deed goes unpunished"

I believe VT has a similar law. He certainly should have waited till ski patrol arrived. If the other person is injured and needs help it just seems like the decent thing to do is to at least wait till help arrives. The fact that he gave contact information to the injured party certainly implies he wasn't trying to avoid responsibility.

At least he stopped to give his information. He could've been trying to get somewhere in a hurry himself... hell maybe to ski patrol for someone else. I'd like to hear the whole story before making assumptions on this one.

I heard some disturbing news last night. Someone who works at the mountain where I was hit told me that it's a game some teenage boys have been playing. They see how many people they can hit AND knock over. You know, I would have almost sworn that it was intentional because he actually hit me twice before I went down.

(10) No skier involved in a collision with another skier or person in which an injury results shall leave the vicinity of the collision before giving his or her name and current address to an employee of the ski area operator or a member of the ski patrol, except for the purpose of securing aid for a person injured in the collision; in which event the person so leaving the scene of the collision shall give his or her name and current address as required by this subsection (10) after securing such aid.

. . .

(12) Any person who violates any of the provisions of subsection (3), (9), (10), or (11) of this section is guilty of a class 2 petty offense and, upon conviction thereof, shall be punished by a fine of not more than one thousand dollars.

I have a separate skiing out-of-control question:

If someone who clearly can't ski straightlines it down a relatively steep run until he yard sales, picks himself back up (with my help retrieving his uphill ski) and then straightlines it again until he yard sales again, can I--instead of retrieving and returning his uphill ski a second time--snag one of his skis and go dump it at ski patrol?

I suppose, if you want. He'll probably just have you snagged for stealing his ski, though, adn won't understand why you did it.

I would be glad to take the ski from an idiot like that.. and tell him he has to retrieve it from the Ski Patrol
