ya my son said there was snow in the mountains above leadville on Thursday night. Drove over Fremont pass Thursday morning towing a camper glad there was no snow then. Also rode my bike up Hagerman pass on Wednesday. It was about 40 degrees when I started around 8. Warmed up quickly though.

Was in Leadville Co this week dropping my son off to college and no snow but did get some sleet at 10k in town.
If your son puts in four years of college in Leadville he is going to come home with the lungs of a Sherpa!:giggle:
Cool town, elev 10K plus feet. 15 mins to Ski Cooper, 30 mins to Copper Mtn. Does he plan to ski regularly, which area?

The students at Colorado Mountain College get free season passes to Copper. Got to make it over the Fremont pass to get there though. Cooper is easier to drive to although there is a bus to and from Copper every day.
The 3rd day he was there he went on a 20 mile single track ride and climbed Mt Sherman at 14k. He pretty much slept the next day.

That is pretty good for being there only 3 days. Working up that red blood cell count!

Sherman is a nice climb from the trail head and is is one of the easiest 14ers, My wife and I did it last year. several old gold mines to explore along the way. Elevation starts to get you around 12,500-13,000 ft. It definitely is a very scrambled hike with loose rock everywhere. Leadville is a cool area. They have an awesome Winter Rodeo right through the middle of town - one of the last things we did on March 12th last year and then stuff shut down the very next day. He should do Mount Elbert - the highest summit of the Rocky Mountains, the highest point in the U.S. state of Colorado, and the second-highest summit in the contiguous United States (after Mount Whitney). It is a moderate 9 mile climb for a 14er and not far from Leadville. Trail head is next to Twin Lakes. In fact there are many 14ers on the way to Buena Vista.

Next I think he is doing Mount Massive. He wants to do Elbert as well but he doesn't thin k he'll have time before snow.

14er.com is a good resource. There are groups that are into winter climbs. We spend too much time skiing - plus I am a fair weather climber.

I was thinking the same. They made this the top priority fire and all resources going to it.

Yup, I imagine they'll get it under control in that area. And hopefully none of them refuse to evacuate like some of your neighbors. lol Saw that on the local news while I was out there, just unfathomable.

As of this morning the fire is around 2 miles west of Sierra at Tahoe. Their fire break line is not completed yet along the entire southwestern boundary of the resort. The amount of fire breaks this fire has already jumped is pretty amazing. Wish them the best, buts its not looking good.
