Trails Hiked:
Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail
Total Distance:
7.2 miles, 2900'elevation gain. A summer book time of 5 hours. Winter book time approx 7 hrs.
Difficulty:
Moderate, however the extreme wind was murder!
Conditions:
Nicely hard packed snow, lots of ice and bitter wind above the last stream crossing & above treeline. Several downed trees not a problem to crawl under or climb over. After 5" of new snow yesterday, the trail was well broken out by a group of 8 from the I.M.C.S. We saw good trail work by SherpaJohn et al.
Special Required Equipment:
Snowshoes were not needed, crampons and balaclava are most definitely essential. Goggles too. Hot green tea w/honey and apple cider extremely helpful.
Trip Report:
It was 3* when Rockgoddess and I started at 8:30am. We met Steve and 7 others from the I.M.C.S. descending the trail later in the morning. They related that the wind was so fierce it knocked down members of their party. We continued upward and onward to find out. It was a bitter howling wind that had to be 50 mph or more above treeline. After enduring this for about an hour we discussed how we had another at least another hour or more in this condition, then decided 4 hours in the brutal, howling wind wasn't fit for a dog. And we had two with us, Stanley & Ghostdog. A bitter cold and a windy, cyclonic day to play in the mountains.
